Overview of this Controversy

Date Originated: January of 2016
Categories: Roy Moore
Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore issued an order directing Alabama probate judges to not issue any marriage licenses to same-sex couples until further notice. The order is a direct challenge to the Supreme Court's authority after its decision to legalize marriage equality in June of 2015. Moore, who is an opponent of same sex marriage, claims his order is meant to clear up confusion because there is a pending lawsuit challenging if the Obergefell ruling (the Supreme Court ruling that legalized marriage equality) applies to all fifty states.
