Oregon Militia Standoff Exposes Media's Double Standard About Minorities

Thugs. Un-American. Criminals.

These are words the media has used to describe minorities who are standing up for their basic human rights. These are words the media has used to describe minorities who are fighting back against police abuse and brutality, an unjust educational system, and a criminal justice system that systemically targets minorities even though they are just as likely as non-minorities to commit a crime.

Terrorists. Islamic Radicals. Islamic (you name it).

These are words the media has used to describe anyone of Islamic decent who is accused of or who has committed a crime in America. It doesn't matter if they committed an act of terrorism or not; if they are of Islamic descent then any crime they have committed or are accused of committing is labeled as terrorism by our supposedly independent media.

Protesters. Patriots. Militiamen. Freedom Fighters.

These are words the media has used to describe the group of heavily armed men who took over a Federal wildlife refuge in rural Oregon. These are words the media has used to describe men who committed a Federal crime and have vowed to occupy Federal land until all of their demands are met.

Does anyone notice the difference between the first two examples and the last example?

Racism, both subtle and not so subtle, has been endemic in America for centuries. Multiple studies have shown that white Americans have inherent biases against non-whites, even if they won't admit it. White Americans, no matter the generation they were born in consider non-whites lazy, unintelligent, yet equal in society. Psychologists have labeled this term covert, or hidden, racism.

What does this have to do with the current standoff in rural Oregon?

A whole lot. The way our media reports things has a lot to do with how the average American interprets it. If the media says an unarmed black teenager is a thug then many Americans will automatically assume that as fact. If the media says an armed group of men who took over a Federal building are militiamen then many Americans will automatically assume that as fact, as well.

How would this standoff be reported if a group from 'Black Lives Matter' took over a Federal Courthouse to demand criminal justice reform? Or how would this standoff be reported if a group of Muslims held a protest demanding an end to profiling?

Why is it that armed white men who take over a Federal building are labeled as patriots, but unarmed black people who protest police brutality are labeled as thugs? Why is it that armed white men who take over a Federal building are labeled as freedom fighters, but unarmed Muslims who fight for their Constitutional rights are labeled as terrorists?

Think about those questions the next time a group of white men take over property that isn't theirs and the media spins it in a way that makes them look like good people.

BLM or any other group taking over a Federal Courthouse is MUCH different than a group taking over a remote, unoccupied federal building. Federal Courthouses are in populated areas and they would be considered a threat to the general public.

I haven't heard anyone in the media call the Oregon people 'patriots.' But they certainly aren't terrorists... yet. By definition, terrorists target civilians to further their goals through fear of harm/death. While there absolutely is a bias in the media about the use of terrorism, you can't counter that by misusing the word on another group>

The right wing media would almost certainly be covering this differently if militants were of a different race or religion, (which is the point of the post), but the nutjobs up in Oregon are isolated, not an immediate threat, AND heavily armed. There is plenty of time to wait these guys out and resolve this situation peacefully. And then prosecute them under the full extent of the law.
