Jamaica's bringing a bobsleigh team to the Sochi Winter Olympic games! I think it appropriate to wish them all the luck I can by saying, "Feel the rhythm! Feel the rhyme! Get on up. It's bobsled time! Cool Runnings.." Bobsleigh games will take place February 16th - 23rd.
It's been 12 years, or 3 Winter Olympics if you want to think about it that way, since Jamaica has been able to qualify for this event. But that drought is now over, in large part thanks to the skill and attitude of the 2 man team's star Winston Watts.
Ability and talent were not a hurdle for this Jamaican team, but financing was. That's pretty typical of the small tropical country of Jamaica; a Winter Olympic event is decidedly hard to prioritize highly for the country. And, this year's estimated cost to participate tallied roughly $160,000 for equipment, travel and whatnot. Luckily, Watts was able to raise almost half of that himself. The rest came from crowd sourcing sites like Indiegogo. The team was able to raise that cash, in part by using the marketing that made them so popular in the late 80's: the hollywood flick 'Cool Runnings'. Watts actually came up with the team's nickname 'Cool Runnings - The Second Generation'. He said he's watched the movie dozens of times for insight and inspiration.
I love that this is happening. I must've watched that movie like 50 times as a kid. Being that I was too young to really appreciate Calgary's '88 Olympics, (the games that inspired the movie) or even SLC's '02 games (Jamaica's last bobsled showing), I'm stoked for Cool Runnings 2 in Russia. I promise to watch the whole thing, if for no other reason than for the off chance that some random quote gets dropped. Would make for a good drinking game.. go Jamaica! Nostalgia and the fact that Jamaicans are generally so nice and easy going have me fully rooting for them.
