Let me go on record in support of a basic Tea Party premise: The American people are over-taxed. Yes, we pay less in taxes than do many Europeans, but effective tax rates in other countries are irrelevant to the question of appropriate taxes here. We’re overtaxed because our governments - federal, state and local - over-spend, not just on military adventures and medical services but also on salaries, pensions and benefits for government employees. Government “service” is more lucrative than work in the private sector and mo...

The United States is not a Christian Nation
Republican Secretary of State candidate Dan Severson has been hitting the religious right radio circuit over the past few weeks, doing interviews with headline-making figures like Bradlee Dean of You Can Run But You Cannot Hide and Pastor Brad Brandon of Berean Bible Baptist Church in Hastings. Severson told his interviewers that he believes the constitutional clause calling for the separation of church and state doesn’t exist, and that he feels there was “fraud, in a major way” in the U.S. Senate recount of 2008.

Farrell Till Whenever the Supreme Court makes a decision that in any way restricts the intrusion of religion into the affairs of government, a flood of editorials, articles, and letters protesting the ruling is sure to appear in the newspapers. Many protesters decry these decisions on the grounds that they conflict with the wishes and intents of the "founding fathers."

The United States is not a Christian Nation
Is America a Christian nation, as many conservatives claim it is? One American doesn't think so. President Obama explained: "One of the great strengths of the United States is … we have a very large Christian population -- we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation. We consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values."

The United States is not a Christian Nation
The following quotations from several of the Founding Fathers of our Nation are from private correspondence rather than from public speeches or pronouncements, and thus give a better view of what they really thought about such things (and what they didn't want to say to the uneducated, superstitious and misled citizenry complete with pitchforks, tar, feathers, and a deep and abiding respect for the "mercy" of the Lord).
