Social Security turned 75 last week. It should have been a joyous occasion, a time to celebrate a program that has brought dignity and decency to the lives of older Americans.

In February, we reported that in 2010, Social Security would start running deficits in 2010. Well, Social Security deficits have officially arrived.

Social Security is and always has been either a "pay-as-you-go" system or one that was partially advance-funded. Its structure, logic, and mode of operation have nothing in common with Ponzi schemes or chain letters or pyramid schemes.

I think every program needs to stand the sunshine of righteous scrutiny. Whether its Social Security, whether its Medicaid, whether its Medicare. Youve got $115 trillion worth of unfunded liability in those three. Theyre bankrupt. Theyre a Ponzi scheme.
