Okay, so we all know how the Catholic Church feels about birth control - so many religions with so many "thou shalt nots". I listened to Chris Matthews whom I respect and mostly agree with, but tonight he seemed 'old' on the topic. I'm not young either, but I do not understand this whole busines of pushing Catholic beliefs on those who are not Catholic. I worked for a Catholic agency for 12 years and 1 person out of 30 were Catholic - and he was gay, so birth control was not an issue for him, though his gayness is an issue for The Church. Most of the staff were women and not only did we not get birth control, we did not get unemployment insurance either. Universities and hospitals in particular, hire hundreds of workers many of whom, I'm sure, are not Catholic, or even if they are, are in favor of birth control. Why should any group be allowed to deprive any sector of the population rights that the law allows others. I try to respect everyone's religious beliefs, but that respect should not cost me a legal right. Put simply, if any organization does not want to provide a service to everyone, then they should not get into a business which requires them to do so. The Catholic Church is in the insurance business along with many other businesses and should be held to the same standards as all businesses.

However, in an effort to reach a compromise here, maybe the law should state that birth control coverage does not have to be offered in any place of business if 90% plus employees are Catholic or against birth control for any reason. That still leaves 10% paying out of pocket, but that's compromise for you. And I'm really tired of hearing men talk about women's breasts and wombs. It's like an obsession. And for all those who think that Christianity is clear on the topics of sexuality and abortion, I remind them that Jesus never wrote a single word about these. In fact, Jesus never wrote anything as far as I know, unless there's something hidden in the Vatican.

catholic business should offer americans the same rights  they deserve as americans. america comes before church because it is america that we owe our religious freedom. if you are catholic then you dont have to take birth control, but you should still have the right to take it like any other american. my wife cannot have children but i still have the right to have birth control under my health plan. and the point that should be heard is many women take birth control for health issues and not just to prevent pregnancy. i believe the catholic church is out of bounds and if they didnt have such political influence it wouldnt be an issue.

I agree with you that men should have no say in the whole subject.
The moment I find a man who went through 40 years of menstrual cycles, including all the wonderful extras like stained clothes, buying tampons and sanitary napkins, cramps, hormonal changes, mood swings, gynaecological visits, headaches or migraines, trying out all kind of birth controls with unexpected side effects and going through nine months of pregnancy with again uncountable very umconfortable side effects, ending with a painful delivery and then raising a kid by breastfeeding it, changing the diapers and supervising it for the next two decades, or getting pregnant due to an uncontrolled passionate moment or worse due to rape I will gladly give him the right to decide about my body and my reproductive system.
I am certainly not giving this right to a bunch of old men in the Vatican who by their own laws are not supposed to have sex or children and who made the only important woman in their olympus of deities a virgin who conceived out of thin air, meaning that women should not have sex.
Following this bunch of old men in dresses and a lot of bling=bling women are only allowed to have sex to produce one child after the other until they break. I hope Obama does not cave in and free birth control will be the law. It is the least society can do for women. They are disadvantaged enough as it is. As far as I know the bunch of old men in dresses did not object to Viagra being prescribed to any man who claims not to get it up?

mma -- You said: "this is not about the catholic church, its about obama and his mandate. he is a socialist and i hope you can see he is forcing his mandate on the church, whats next the church must also provide abortions? sick, and i dont believe in abortions, take it from one who knows."

If you have been following history, of course, you'll know that Obama is not doing these so called "socialist" things on his own.  As Rachel Maddow pointed out in her show last night (although I doubt that you listen to her), Barack Obama's birth control policies are all "borrowed" from the Republicans. In 1998, Bob Dole was making commercials for Viagra, and subsequently Republicans made Viagra as a mandate to be covered in health insurance policies.

The women of America objected that why should Viagra be covered and not birth control pills.  So states across the nation begin to mandate birth control as part of their health care coverage. Maddow points out that some entirely Republican controlled states did that.  Iowa Republicans mandated that not only businesses cover birth control, but also churches. Arizona also, although Republicans in that state made an exception for churches. In Arkansas, the Republican controlled legislature passed a law mandating birth control health coverage that was signed into law by then Governor Mike Huckabee. Ditto for Mitt Romney in Massachusetts.

In fact the whole concept of the individual mandate is a Republican idea that they pushed in the 1990s and Mitt Romney adopted for his state of Massachusetts.

So when you say "its about obama and his mandate" you have that half right.  It's not about the mandate at all...it's all about Obama. If Obama was not President, this would not be an issue at all, much like it was not an issue for the entire Bush Presidency...because Republicans were for it.

Furthermore, that mandate is not costing tax payers or insurance companies any money.  Insurance companies are happy to cover birth control at no cost to anyone because they know that the alternative, an unwanted pregnancy can be very expensive. It's no different than all the healthy life style initiatives and regular check-ups being covered by insurance companies...call it preventative maintenance if you like.  It makes good business sense to cover birth control for FREE.

Now what about Viagra? See ABC's note on that from 2002: Erections Get Insurance; Why Not the Pill?

Thank you Bob Dole...

I don't know whether you are a man or woman but just forget about President Obama and his mandate. Just focus on whether you want someone telling you what you can do with your body. I hope you consider what you just wrote if you have children, grands, or a young person just starting a family.
I think this is an assault on women. Think about all of the teacher firing and layoffs. Most teachers are women. Please take a look at how this can affect your personal life and not the Catholic church, the church dosen't have children or grandchildren.

mma-do you want to kill people that have abortions? i dont believe it is ok to have sex with no responsibility, however it is how we teach our children that developes proper morals. the issue here is american rights. no one should have power over my free spirit. as an american i thought things should be left to me to decide whether or not i want to live that way. all men are created equal, with certain inalienable rights, which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. so many of the things that make me happy are taken away because of people like you who want to impose their influence on their fellow americans. religiously you may not agree with someone, but this country was founded on the principals of individual freedom. i want the freedom to decide what is wrong for myself. if i am catholic then i wont take birth control, but i have the right to decide for myself. if your way is truly better than mine it will be evident in the life you lead. im sure i am much bigger and badder than any of you reading this but i do not impose my beliefs on others, and i dont appreciate people trying to take rights that were paid for in blood. its not the world that makes us afraid, it is what we know about ourselves that makes us afraid.

Did you know : The Pill isn't just for birth control: Did you know that it can also protect against certain life-threatening cancers, plus help relieve some painful period symptoms treat acne, Endometriosis, provide  Lighter, less painful periods,  PMS relief,  and yes family planning

Condoms,  are contraceptives, will they ban them next VASCECTOMIES are a form of sterilization and there has been no hallo baloo about them. Not only that,  vasectomies are
covered 100% by most insurances.

This is not something against religious rights, it’s entirely against women’s rights to make decisions about their health care.

Let me first say, that the majority of the people who have a problem with birth control are in fact not even FEMALE! How arrogant to discuss on topics that have nothing to do with your wellbeing, and how dare you try to effect our wellbeing with your monotonous bullcrap! Birth control is useful in more situations than you think. Such as: hormone regulation. Personally, I do not have sexual intercourse with men, so the issue of an unplanned pregnancy is rather unlikely. I take a low dose of birth control to ensure that my body operates efficiently, because I won't have a regular period without it. A friend of mine has an ovary disorder and she takes birth control because she has low levels of estrogen. Not to mention, if a woman does take birth control to prevent pregnancy, what of it? Aren't the republicans famous for complaining about the lack of finances in this country? If you take away my right for an abortion, among other things you are violating my constitutional rights, and if you violate one you might as well violate them all and take women back to where we had no RIGHT to say or do anything we wanted, be it with our bodies or whathaveyou. It has became a ridiculous power game of who cab we opress now. Disgusting.

I find it offensive that Males picket an abortion clinic, or vote against women's rights to have choice, but these same men are the very first to complain about the cost of welfare & medical care for millions of fatherless infants. The Repubs usually have a fit about abortion clinics & yet will scream the loudest if their taxes must provide for millions of children born due to the LACK of abortion clinics. Abortion is the easiest safest & least costly way to handle an unwanted pregnancy. So the "economic geniuses" among the Repubs SHOULD be all in favor of it.

WHY are they not? Well, they say it is because they are "PRO-LIFE". They must protect the tiny little 2 inch fetus, or even the zygote, or sperm BEFORE it is conceived. (According to the latest news in April 2012). They have gone beyond dogmatic, to illogical, to CRAZY. I have a lot of Catholic friends, & they all use birth control. In fact, the minute the birth control "pill" was first invented (1960), Catholics from the previous generation were more than ready to jump on the bandwagon.

It seems that women are just to be used for Baby Factories, if the Repubs have their way. It is totally against human logic. We are in a time of Massive Over-Population all over the world & the last thing we need is to over-populate America at a time of economic downturn, & the loss of our jobs & industry, & imminent warfare threatening globally. Only Repubs could be so illogical as to create this crisis & then refuse to correct it. What do they really hope to gain?

An IMMENSE WORK-FORCE, never-ending, to use for slave labor, (will work for food), or men who are so desperate for a job that they will enlist in ANY ridiculous Military Endeavor, so our global OIL SEARCH can continue into every continent & nation on earth. Its making huge profits for Halliburton industries. (See PNAC book of GOP). It goes beyond Greed, & well past power-seeking, into the area of "sabotage" of US Sovereignty & Constitution.

NOTE: This (anti-abortion) & "fetus life-saving" obsession of the Repubs has been high on their agenda for 38 years, & they are always getting more militant & strident in their rhetoric on the subject. They've done many abortion clinic bombings & even murder of some abortion doctors. (In the NAME of Religion & LIFE). I don't think MURDER is Pro-Life.

Next, they are so pro-life when it comes to a 2 inch fetus, but LOOK how they feel when the fetus has grown up to 18 yrs of age. Now it is time to ENLIST in the ARMY, & the Repubs will gladly send off all our middle class boys to ANY WAR they can dream up, including a few illegitimate wars. Then GOP will keep those young men over in some hell hole in the desert, over & over again, for YEARS, until they are killed, crippled or else commit suicide. The GOP do not care about LIFE when it has grown up to 18 yrs old. It is just a piece of protoplasm to be used, abused, & later "refused" adequate health care. Once they get injured or crippled in combat, the GOP doesn't want to touch them with a 10 ft pole.

Put this real simply. Men should stay out of womens issues, like BC and abbortion. These are choices made bt individual women, based on THEIR beliefs and place in their lives. What I mean is, do they WANT to have a child now,can they afford it...etc. Their partners should be involved in that decesion of course, that's called being married, or in a committed releationship. The Re-Pubs need to get over it. Folks, it is impossible to be "Pro-Life" and "Pro-death penalty" at the same time. It just is.Yet all of the Re-Pubs claim to be just that. Women should choose what is best for THEM, no cookie cutter law will ever apply here. (or at least it shouldn't.)
