Newt Gingrich twisted facts on the Food Stamp President have been debunked by several fact checking news sources, yet he continues to use it effectively, pandering to the most bigoted part of the Republican base.

And it has worked as he not only won South Carolina but also now leads in the polls in Florida. Gingrich has a lot of baggage that hasn't really hurt him so far. Joshua Holland in his January 24th article in AlterNet, How Newt Gingrich Shamelessly Feeds the Fears and Egos of White Conservatives -- and Why That May Win Him the GOP Nomination, speculates that his strategy just might win him the nomination.

Newt Gingrich is a deeply flawed candidate. But fresh off his South Carolina trouncing of Romney, who has long been anointed the GOP front-runner, the political establishment is beginning to wonder – with horror or enthusiasm, as the case may be – if the veteran pol actually has a shot at becoming the Republicans' standard-bearer in 2012.

Holland points out that Gingrich has not engaged in the traditional populism against bankers and big business, but rather has chosen a "brand of right-populism...directed at cultural elites – intellectuals, the media and “latté liberals.”...elites who have been trying for a half century to force us to quit being American and become some other kind of system."

The dishonest branding of the "Food Stamp President" and it's intended duplicitous stereotyping of African-Americans will continue to be a part of Gingrich's campaign rhetoric much like the fictitious "welfare queen" was so effective in Ronald Reagan's winning Presidential campaign and election.
