America is largely a nation of immigrants, although many now are second, third or more generations removed from our ancestors. Virtually every American that I have met cherishes their roots whether it be Irish, Italian, Japanese, some African country that supplied slaves, Cubans, Mexicans, Chinese, etc. They all share a certain sense of pride when someone in the country of their forefathers achieves something noteworthy...perhaps an Olympic medal or a Nobel prize. Family recipes are handed down from generations and those special dinners are served to guests with pride to their ancestral links. Stories are told and retold lest the younger generation forget their roots.

Mitt Romney is the exception. His father and his grandfather were both born in polygamist Mormon colonies in Mexico. When Mitt's father was five years old, the family fled Mexico to the United States to escape from the violence of the Mexican revolution. So one would think that Mitt would have a certain empathy for Mexico and the Mexican people. In fact it's just the opposite.

The New York Daily News writes in this article, Mitt Romney flees from his Mexican roots with tough anti-immigrant stance:

"If elected, Romney has said, he will deport undocumented immigrants, build a border fence and add hundreds of new guards. You know, all those Mexicans crossing the border — like his grandfather and father — are taking jobs from real Americans — and Mexican Mitt (check @mexicanmitt in Twitter: “Corporations are peoples, my amigos!”) will not allow it.

Tough-guy Romney would also cut federal funds to “sanctuary” cities, make English the official language and veto the DREAM Act, although as someone point out, his old man could have been a “poster child” for such law."

Further exploring Mitt Romney's roots the Washington Post reports that his great-great-grandfather, Miles A. Romney, left England for the United States in 1841. His great-grandfather, Miles P. Romney, who had five wives and more than 30 children fled the United States for Mexico in the 1880s because anti-polygamy laws were tightening. In Mexico, he founded a Mormon colony where plural marriage could thrive.

Okay...maybe Mitt doesn't want to call attention to his great grandfather's polygamist past, but by avoiding it, he calls attention to it. He has nothing to apologize for. Neither his father nor his grandfather practiced polygamy. What is harder to understand is how he has forsaken his Mexican roots entirely. Not only that, but his criticism of "European style socialism" doesn't endear him to his English ancestors either.

The words that many in the media have used to portray Mitt Romney are "lacks empathy." They have applied those words in describing how as CEO of Bain Capital, he ruthlessly gutted companies and fired workers while amassing a fortune estimated at some $250 million. And they used "lack of empathy" to describe the 36 year old Mitt Romney that put their family dog on a car top carrier for a 12 hour vacation road trip.

Empathy is a character trait not found in abundance in the CEO's of those vulture capitalists that seek to make a buck by raiding companies. However, empathy is something that I would want and demand from our President of the United States of America. America is not a business and cannot be operated as a business. A President needs to have empathy for all social classes, religions, ethnic groups, and yes...also the family pets.
