Reference: The Hill, January 12, 2012: Romney’s ‘dog on a car roof’ story won’t go away

I had heard about the Mitt Romney dog story a while back in 2007, but after being buried it has now resurfaced.

In 1983, a 36 year old Mitt Romney, went on a driving vacation from Boston to Ontario with his wife and five sons packed into the family station wagon. Romney put their Irish Setter dog, Seamus, into a dog carrier and attached it to the station wagon’s roof rack where Seamus remained for the duration of the 12-hour trip to Ontario...except for one pit stop described as follows:

"During the trip, the Boston Globe reported, Romney’s oldest son, Tagg, looked around through the rear window and yelled, “Dad — gross!” A brown liquid was dripping down the back window — diarrhea from an animal that just might have been caused by the stress of being inside a cage for 12 hours on top of a car going 60 mph."

And what did Romney do about the dog's diarrhea? According to the Boston Globe:

“As the rest of the boys joined in the howls of disgust, Romney coolly pulled off the highway and into a service station. There he borrowed a hose, washed down Seamus and the car, then hopped back onto the highway. It was a tiny preview of a trait he would grow famous for in business: emotion-free crisis management.”

So what does this say about Mitt Romney? He was only 36 years old then...does it suggest a certain lack of judgment and lack of empathy? A 12 hour car ride on the top of the car in a kennel? Romney doesn't deny the story but says the kennel was air tight. Wow!

Is it fair to bring up that story now some 29 years later? Does it mean anything when one is judging his credentials for the President of the United States of America? Should it be an issue at all?
