With all else that is being discussed when will we see a plan in action that even begins to discuss the issue of educating people in hopes of eradicating hunger and poverty (whether extreme or not) in the U.S? Is this simply an issue that doesn't matter to anyone? If everyone else is simply too distracted with the bigger issues maybe a new candidate should be elected that has mainly this on their agenda.

I think step towards eradicating hungry and poverty are being taken, it's just in the background of other issues. For example, if the U.S. can reach full employment, people will have jobs and can then by food. Other programs like welfare also take steps to ending hunger, but programs like that are really expensive so they catch a lot of heat from politicians.

I guess, in short, if we can tackle some of the main issues that are at forefronts of debates right now, it should, in turn, help the hunger/poverty issue. But this is only in theory.

Vee, you make a good point. Why is it that in the land of plenty and many good government programs to help stave off hunger, it still exists in our country? The Feeding America website provides some statistics from a comprehensive Hunger in America 2010 study.

The report shows that hunger is increasing at an alarming rate in the United States, and [the Feeding America] network is expanding its reach in response:

Feeding America is annually providing food to 37 million Americans, including 14 million children. Each week, approximately 5.7 million people receive emergency food assistance from an agency served by a Feeding America member.

This is an increase of 46 percent over 2006, when we were feeding 25 million Americans, including 9 million children, each year.

That means one in eight Americans now rely on Feeding America for food and groceries.

Feeding America's nationwide network of food banks is feeding 1 million more Americans each week than we did in 2006.

Thirty-six percent of the households we serve have at least one person working.

More than one-third of client households report having to choose between food and other basic necessities, such as rent, utilities and medical care.

The number of children the Feeding America network serves has increased by 50 percent since 2006.

The US government does have several programs that help eradicate hunger for the above mentioned 37 million Americans including the Food Stamp Program with 45 million beneficiaries; the School Lunch Program serving 30 million kids each day; the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program for healthcare and nutrition of low-income pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and infants and children under the age of five; and of course the aforementioned Emergency Food Assistance Program that helps supplement the diets of low-income needy persons, including elderly people, by providing them with emergency food and nutrition assistance. Also many faith based groups and other non-profit groups are actively involved in feeding the hungry.

These programs have certainly helped to stave off hunger, but many of the federal government programs are under attack by Republicans seeking cost cutting measures in the budget. And despite the programs at their very best, some Americans are still missing out...i.e. are hungry. I don't have answers on how/what to improve food programs in America, but I'll help spread the word. With unemployment in America expected to remain high for the next few years the problem is not going away soon.

Suggestions invited.
