During the Nixon administration, the White House engaged in a series of barely legal, or actually illegal, efforts to stifle their opponents. Collectively, these efforts were known as
"Dirty tricks".

For a lot of reasons, it's been a messy year for politics in America. Flying a little below the radar are the "dirty tricks" that the Republican Party is using to discourage voter turnout of the voters who are the most likely to show them the door: the poor and the disenfranchised.
Because these efforts are a violation of the 15th Amendment to the Constitution, Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. has vowed to take legal action to ensure that restrictive legislation recently passed in 12 states is not discriminatory.

In Arizona, recently defeated Russell Pearce had alledged that his opponents were using voter fraud to defeat him, even though no evidence of voter fraud existed. Republicans are using the same excuse in other states to justify their more restrictive legislation.

I expect that the Justice Department will have at least some success in its efforts, but the real solution is for today's voters to look their Republican officials in the eye and use a line last used during the McCarthy era:

"Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"

Yes, that was the perfect phrase to describe the situation with Joseph McCarthy --- "Have you no sense of decency left at all?" Democrats were being vilified and accused of being Communists, and one of the perps in this case was Ronnie Reagan, (actor in cowboy movies & "Bedtime for Bonzo").

He was also in the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) & he acted as a "snitch" to spy upon all actors to tell the HUAC which ones were communists. Because of his testimony, many writers, actors, producers, had been black-balled (forbidden to work in the movie industry). One I can remember reading about was Henry Fonda, who acted in dozens of movies from 1950's on. ("Grapes of Wrath," "12 Angry Men," Young Mister Lincoln," "On Golden Pond," "Battle of the Bulge," "Midway," "The Longest Day," "Fail-Safe," & many more). Later on, the world discovered that McCarthy was full of baloney, & his attempts at calling everyone a Communist had been for publicity & self-empowerment. Henry Fonda continued to be in the movies, & later on, his daughter Jane Fonda carried on the tradition. As for Ronnie Reagan, (who gave false testimony before the HUAC) he was in the movies for awhile longer, divorced his actress wife to marry Nancy Davis, & later he became the 40th President (GOP) of the United States. (His greatest acting job of all). The Republicans are very proud of Reagan, who had stopped disability payments to all the Viet Nam veterans, & sold Hawk missiles to the Ayatollah in Iran (selling weapons to an enemy nation is officially listed as "treason"). Some have claimed that Ronnie's best acting performance came as he "faked" Alzheimer's in his last days, otherwise if he "knew" about the sale of weapons to Iran, he might have had to go to the slammer. I do feel sorry for him, as he seemed to be a nice guy. He just had incredibly stupid (GOP) advisors. (This same problem still continues today). It should be required that any candidate for the Presidency take a (1) Drug Test (2) IQ test (3) Sanity test -- to avoid the crazy (GOP) circus we had this year.

Ronald Reagan turned up again this morning, in a very indirect manner.

A poll from a conservative organization that calls itself Human Events turned up on my computer this morning, asking if Eric Holder (who's trying to eliminate the voter fraud by the Republican Party) should be fired. The poll is shown below:

Amazingly, only 1.45% of the 60,000 people taking the poll (including me) felt that he shoud NOT be fired. Unless you're absolutely brain dead, you'll recognize immediately by the lopsided results that there is some biased reporting going on (which is why Saddam Hussein also got at least 90% of the vote in Iraq).

Where Reagan gets involved is due to the fact the that Human Events paper was his favorite newspaper for 40 years. He credits the paper with "helping him stop being a liberal Democrat". Even when his aides tried to keep it from him, he found ways to smuggle it into the White House.

The author of the article above is a conservative named Dr. Lee Edwards.

Contributors to the newspaper include ann Coulter, Pat Buchanan, Sean Hannity, Newt Gingrich, and Oliver North, none of whom would be considered "flaming liberals".

Since Human Events was started in 1944, it's entirely possible that Reagan got his McCarthy era ideas from the newspaper.

Massive voter fraud in the 2009 Iranian Presidential election (14,000,000 votes disappeared) resulted in peaceful demonstratons in the street. Many protestors held signs like the one above. The protests led to many arrests, and some deaths (the best known is Neda Agha-Soltan).

The United States is not Iran, but as Andrew Rosenthal pointed out this morning in The New York Times, the Republicans are trying to invalidate as many as 5,000,0000 votes of a group of people who tend to be liberal - college students.

Attorny General Eric Holder and the Justice Department has been successful in blocking a new discriminatiory voting law in South Carolina, but there are at least 12 other states that have also passed restrictive voting laws. Predictably, conservative organziations (such as the Human Events newspaper) have attempted to demonize Mr. Holder.

I hope that we never get to the point that college students in America have to carry signs like the one posted above. As long as the Justice Department is able to do its job, "Occupy Harvard" will never come to pass.
