"Birthright citizenship I think is a mistake," Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina told Fox News . "We should change our Constitution and say if you come here illegally and you have a child, that child's automatically not a citizen."

Can you believe this !?

I am so totally against this... it seems that for a while the issue has died down (it was first mooted in July 2010) However we need to revive the matter and make it a campaign issue in 2012.

I'm posting this topic - because it totally irks me at how some Republicans are so arrogant !

Maybe (our fellow) Republicans should ask the real landowners of America - the Native Americans ( The Apache, the Hopi, The Cherokee, the Navajo, the Comanchee, the Choctaw and the tribe of Delaware) first, for advice.

If John McCain and his cohorts (Mitch McConnell and  Arizona Sens. Jon Kyl ) - who have indicated an openness to exploring the 14th Amendment issue raised by Sen. Graham; then they should address my statement below:

In their efforts to have this ludicrous attempt to change the 14th Amendment - would they agree to having it  backdated and legally commence as of 11th November 1620 - when the (illegal) Pilgrims of the Mayflower arrived on the shores of America and began to colonise the lands of the Native Americans ? -  If so ...then  I'm all for the amendment !

The Truth Hurts...sometimes.

I can not agrre with this stronger!
Allowing these kids to become citizens makes about as much snese as saying a baby born to a woman who is serving time in jail or prison automaticaly becomes a felon! What a drawing card for illegal aliens. Head for the border when they get pregnant! The last I saw (several years ago) there was an estimated 12000 women in the United States that had babies fathered by illegal aliens who refused to accpet responsibility for these babies and the American Tax Payer was footing the bill for both the mother and the baby!

Surprisingly, both of the arguments posted above make perfect sense to me, even though
they look at the issue of "illegal" babies quite differently.

I don't get real excited about the issue of illegal immigrants, since there are a lot of things that
should be of more concern to our country, but I found that the "voting rights act timeline" posted below has some interesting (and suprising) information:

www.aclu.org/voting-rights/voting-rights-act-timeline

For example, the folks who were actually here first (Native Americans) weren't given the right to vote until 1924, even though they became citizens in 1866.

At the founding of our country, Catholics, Jews, and Quakers weren't allowed to vote.

The Mexicans that were here in 1848 (when parts of the present United States were actually part of Mexico) automatically became citizens.

Women weren't allowed to vote until 1920, and they STILL can't vote (or drive) in Saudi Arabia.

The most recent studies that I've seen about illegal immigrants is that they are "cost netural". In other words, our government DOES provide some type of assistance to them, but the taxes that they are forced to pay essentially balance out the expenditures that we make.
