When Did the GOP Lose Touch With Reality?
David Frum, as many of you may know, was the speech writer for George W. Bush and a Republican: Frum states, "I believe in free markets, low taxes, reasonable regulation, and limited government. I voted for John McCain in 2008, and I have strongly criticized the major policy decisions of the Obama administration. But as I contemplate my party and my movement in 2011, I see things I simply cannot support."
In this well written article for the New York Magazine he talks about what the Republican Party used to represent, citing numerous examples of what they used to support, but now are against because of Tea Party influence and anti-Obama fervor. Quoting Frum:
"The Tea Party...movement has failed time and again to produce even a remotely credible candidate for president. Sarah Palin, Donald Trump, Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich... A political movement that never took governing seriously was exploited by a succession of political entrepreneurs uninterested in governing—but all too interested in merchandising. Much as viewers tune in to
American Idol
to laugh at the inept, borderline dysfunctional early auditions, these tea-party champions provide a ghoulish type of news entertainment each time they reveal that they know nothing about public affairs and have never attempted to learn. But Cain’s gaffe on Libya or Perry’s brain freeze on the Department of Energy are not only indicators of bad leadership. They are indicators of a crisis of followership. The tea party never demanded knowledge or concern for governance, and so of course it never got them."
Frum further describes Fox News and other conservative media business models as being built on "provoking the audience into a fever of indignation (to keep them watching) and fomenting mistrust of all other information sources (so that they never change the channel)...where they "immerse their audience in a total environment of pseudo-facts and pretend information."
Frum concludes with these words for his party: "The party with a stronger charge on its zapper right now, the party struggling with more self-imposed obstacles to responsible governance, the party most in need of a course correction, is the Republican Party. "
Read David Frum's entire article and his "dastardly wrong" view of his party at the above link. It makes for fascinating reading, and it is good journalism.

I made the mistake of voting for George W (twice), which I'll always regret, so it is graifying to read that a life long Republican has come to the realization that "the Grand Old Party" has become hostage to a few genuine crackpots (the Koch brothers and Grover Norquist), which (oddly enough) will help Barck Obama to get re-elected.
John McCain was doing well in the polls until he picked Sarah Palin as his running mate.
After a few "dead on" SNL skits, enough people came to the realization that she was (for lack of a better term) a little wacky, which largely describes the current GOP slate for President.

Well....there's is one man in the Republican field who deserves our attention.
The Last Republican Left, Buddy Roemer.
This is his Big 3 platform.
1. Campaign Finance Reform
2. Corporate Tax Reform
3. Fair Trade
He takes $100 donations, per contributor. Maximum. Period. No PAC or S-PAC money.
And he's been held out of every debate.
Gee, I wonder why?
He'd stand up there and call them on their crony-capitalist campaign financing. And while I think Roemer could do so while still technically observing Reagan's 11th Commandment, he'd obviously come close to crossing that line.
That's the man that Roemer is: a Small businessman. Main-street banker. Methodist. Reagan Democrat turned Republican. He fought corruption his entire life in politics; as a two-time governor of Louisiana and member of the House. He replaced corrupt governors both times in office. Voters remember him as one of the good ones.
I am not a Republican. I don't agree with Roemer's macroeconomic ideas. I don't like his Reagan fetish. But I would betray the principles that I stand for by not supporting Roemer in his endeavors.
In a sane country, a politician like Buddy Roemer would be honored, and the news media would demand his participation in the debates.
Occupy Both Parties. If Wall Street does it, why don't we?
Campaign Finance Reform NOW! Term-Limits Now!
Occupy Everything.
Buddy Roemer 2012!
