So the House of Representatives with a next to zero approval rating and no jobs bills seriously considered this year or on the horizon, decided to while away some more time by passing a bill reaffirming our national motto as "In God We Trust." Of course the vote was 396-9, and I suppose those nine who voted against it will be villified by the far right at the next election.
Obama called out Speaker Boehner on the issue: "You've been debating a commemorative coin for baseball. You've had legislation reaffirming that 'In God We Trust' is our motto. That's not putting people back to work. I trust in God, but God wants to see us help ourselves by putting people back to work."
Anything but a jobs bill...that would make the House Republicans vulnerable. It's so much easier to just blame Obama as
Boehner did on Wednesday:
“Instead of engaging in the legislative process, the president has been campaigning,” Boehner said, according to a source present during the morning meeting in the Capitol. “If the president would get more engaged and call on the Senate to get moving, there’s a lot more we could get done this year on jobs for the American people.”
Huh? Yes Boehner had the gall to suggest Obama is campaigning instead of trying to move on a jobs bill. That of course will score him points with Rush Limbaugh and Fox News viewers, but does the rest of the country not see through it? I cringed listening to Boehner and McConnell.
What's next...inscribing "In God We Trust" on Tim Tebow's and the rest of the helmets of the Denver Broncos? It seems that "God" is being invoked not only in politics (Rick Perry, Michelle Bachmann et al) but in sports. Does anyone believe that every Denver Broncos game would be a sellout except for Tim Tebow mania...not because of his football skills but because he openly politics for "God"...on the field. The Denver Broncos and Tim Tebow need help...but like all the unemployed in America, if they are counting on God to do it all for them, it could be a long season of hell.
I'm a Broncos fan, and I actually think Tebow is a decent nice guy...a role model for other athletes in many respects. But he is way over the top in flounting his God on the football field. However, are Tebow's actions any different than the House voting to reaffirm "In God We Trust," as our national motto?
