Maureen Dowd, a New York Times contributor, points out in her article Dowd: Anne Frank was Mormon? that when people are asked to think of one word that comes to mind when thinking of Republican hopefuls, they go as follows: Herman Cain and 9-9-9, Rick Perry and Texas, and Mitt Romney with Mormon.

While Romney is quoted by saying that it is repugnant that "we should choose people based on their religion", the fact is that the GOP lot is infamous for religious based campaigns. Dowd ends her column by saying, "Republicans are the ones who have made faith part of the presidential test. Now we’ll see if Mitt can pass it."

Sounds like Romney is just annoyed that his faith is called a cult while all the other larger 'cults' are a-okay when it comes to their faith. What does everyone think of this?? Do you think Romney can 'pass the test'?

Religion is only one divisive issue that divides the GOP. It is pretty clear to me that at this point in the primary that those that consider themselves 'highly religious' are also 'regressively conservative' in every facet of their life. I truly  believe that people who are this blind and headstrong will vote for a Ron Paul or some other extremist that chooses to run as an independent. The GOP really hurt themselves for their future when they decided to 'pander' to the conservative religious legions of people who refuse to think forward.

During the primaries and caucuses Ron Paul will continue to get his share of the votes, and maybe even more so once Santorum and Perry drop out. Given a choice between Romney and Paul (watch Virginia) many Christian evangelicals will choose Paul.

However, when it comes to Obama versus Romney in the Presidential election, party loyalty will dictate Romney. To ensure that happens in a big way, Romney would be wise to choose an evangelical as a running mate much like McCain did. But which one? Would Huckabee, Santorum, Bachmann or Perry or perhaps even Sarah Palin agree to serve with Romney after the acrimonious campaign?

Schmidt:

My guess is that Romney will be the eventual nominee.

Due to their extreme views, selecting any of the names that you mentioned as the
Vice Presidential candidate would probably ensure a landslide victory for Obama,

John McCain may have made some tactical errors during the course of his campaign, but selecting Sara Palin as his running mate virtually guarnateed his defeat (thank you, Saturday Night Live!)

I agree that Huckabee, Bachmann, Perry and Sarah Palin are very unlikely candidates as VP running mates for Romney. However, the social conservatives meeting in Texas this past weekend are coalescing behind Rick Santorum as the Presidential candidate...their choice for the "other than Romney" candidate. If Romney ends up being the ultimate Republican Party choice, then I wonder if the social conservatives will make a hard push for Santorum as VP. They forced McCain to take Palin, so it could happen again.

Two VP candidates mentioned in the media are New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte and perhaps Virginia Governor Bob MacDonell. Both are devout Catholics and should be okay with the evangelicals because of their anti-choice views on abortion and opposition to same sex marriage. But both have other baggage that can hurt them in national campaigns.
