Why is it that the right sees "Occupy Wall Street" protesters as "mobs" (Eric Canter's quote, several have the same sentiment) while the Tea Party movement was a "grass-roots movement from discontented, salt of earth true Americans, afraid of where their country was headed?

To clarify, Occupy Wall Street is a group of large protesters that started off in Washington D.C. and have been sprouting up demonstrations in several other major cities across the U.S. here recently. The groups are about as collectively coherent as the Tea Party was when it started. But, they do seem to have a unified message, "Wall Street and greedy corporations are destroying America!" Or something to that effect.

I guess it's conservative's version of payback over making the Tea Partiers look bad. Well, that wasn't that hard. What do you think? Do you support what 'Occupy Wall Street' is doing?
Do you think it's just the Dem's version of the Tea Party?

Repost from other board:

Yeah, I don't think you can just neatly call the Occupier movement a "liberal" Tea Party.

This is not about Big vs. Small Government.....this movement is about RESTORING VIRTUE in the political class.

Main issue is money in politics.

This is seen as the root source of a lot of other problems.

There's ample room for debate about the role of government. But debate is just debate; regardless of your theory of government, nothing can be accomplished without the blessing of corporate power.

I refuse to accept this as just the way it is....

and while BCRA was flawed (overbearing in some respects, weak in others), Citizen's United has sent us down a dangerous path...surging towards Fascism.

I have a common sense solution to the problem: Government acting as a buyer and seller in the marketplace can stipulate in contracts with those it does business with that said party to the contract cannot donate to(independently/directly) or be involved with candidate specific campaigns.
In a similar regard, Congress could simply make it a law that you can't lobby government within a certain measure and also contribute directly or indirectly to candidate specific campaigns, as part of its responsibilities to ensure a Republican form of government.

Other problems relate to enforcement mechanisms and separating candidate specific campaigns from issue campaigns. What it comes down to is a need for strict rules...and not crazed Kafkaesque loopholes that allow shadowy political organizations to masquerade as charities and non-profits.
Everybody still has a right to unlimited issue campaigning and to lobby government. They just can't do that and also contribute to candidate specific campaigns.

Government should consider policy ideas based on their merit....not on campaign contributions.

Furthermore, we need a buffer zone b/n public management and private employment, as opposed to the leadership level revolving doors between the public and private sectors, which the elites currently enjoy.

This is how we will restore Virtue...and a government "of, by, and for" the people.

I demand action be taken on this proposal at once.

Power to the People!

Are you serious? The kids down at Pioneer Plaza give two shits about Obama. And there's not a Union member among them. I would hardly call them Marxist/Socialist/Communists. They want an end to the corruption of both sides of the aisle. And it's plainly clear what side you stand on....greed, corruption, decadence & depravity.

They demand virtue in our political system. And there is honor flowing through them stronger than any river of gold.

Damn you, sir! These kids are moral leaders trying to take responsibility for what's happening.

If you small government people had any real principles left you would stand with them.

But you don't......your just power-hungry authoritarians who have made it clear that the law is "written to be too powerful for the weak, and too weak for the strong."-Anarchisis

I see it as Paul Ryan's and Eric Cantor's combined CHUTSPAH!

They take away from the poor to give to the rich and then turn around and accuse us who protest of class warfare.  That's chutspah of the glatt kosher variety!

I don't see Occupy  groups as leaders. Now I grant them that they have made many think about the situation that  the congressional leaders have placed American Citizens . However Occupy groups don't have a solution because whoever is behind these groups haven't given them the big picture.
The solution to equally balance is for (1) Create term limits for all congressional (so-called) representatives of certain districts. Any and every congressperson that have been in office for four years are more must leave the office and return to their home district. We don't need to ask the elected congress to vote on this as a bill when we the American Citizens can simply refuse to re-elect any of them. How much you love your congress person should never match the love you have for your own personal family.. (2) If the Occupy group really want change then they sure work to become more informed and then choose to run for an congressional seat in their own district.

Hey KGS,
Occupy Wall Street was not started by Unions, it was started by Americans disgusted of loosing their jobs and loosing their medical insurance to outsourcing and losing their retirements on 401K funds on Wall Street (ie; Enron). Republicans gave companies tax cuts for outsourcing jobs and giving the rich ridiculas tax cuts which Republicans are still protecting today.

Occupy Wall Street protesters are using their First Amendment rights which states "freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom for assembly and right to petition our government". Occupy Wall Street protesters rights are being violated by forcing them to leave because of sanitary concerns or for having tents. If protesters are violent then arrest them but arresting them for having tents, or telling them to leave because of sanitary reasons is violating our 1st Amendment. Show me in the First Amendment where it states Americans can not assembly if its unsanitary or if they have a tent... This is Anti-American !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In 2001, Republicans took a 236 billion surplus from Clinton, decided to give taxcuts to the rich, tax cuts to companies outsourcing middle class jobs, created a BIGGER government with a new Homeland Security Dept, added airport security screeners and a new Medicare prescription plan and 2 simultaneous wars, all leaving America with an 8 trillion deficit in 2009 when Obama was inaugurated. This is closer to TREASON than anything Obama has done !!!!
Bush is even being targeted for war crimes from other countries.

Companies and people like you may hate Unions but Union jobs created the American middle class and have helped American workers with higher wages, higher benefits and most Union jobs have pensions, not a 401K gamble on Wall St.

While most Americans agree that our government has become to BIG, you Republicans want government to get more into our liberties by removing a womans "right-to-choose". Can't have it both ways.

There is nothing Marxist, Communist or Socialist about it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You need to do more research than just watching Fox News !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From incidents reported at many of the Occupy sites, rapes, robberies assults etc there has to be a better way to get attention, maybe pool ther money togeher and produce some ads for TV. People like Micheal Moore joining the Occupiers for a spotlight, when he is the 1% certainly doesn' help the cause either.

I see very little News about the OCCUPY movement lately. It is like they all disappeared into the night, never to be seen again. Are they all in jail? Or are they in a hospital from being injured by tear gas & pepper spray & canisters of explosive material.(?) It was seeming to get bigger & more powerful, then suddenly POOF!! If nobody pays any attention, they could all be sent off to detention without a lawyer or trial by jury. It seems that the media, on TV or even in the newspaper ignores the whole subject of Occupiers. It puzzles me. We are the 99%, so why would this be ignored? Could the evil 1% control the entire media?

El Prezidente Kaboom has posted an excellent article by the Occupy Washington DC movement in his MMT Summit thread entitled: The 99%’s Deficit Proposal: How to create jobs, reduce the wealth divide and control spending.

There is a lot of thought that went into it, and it demonstrates that rather than "some dirt hippies" the movement is much more educated and intellectual than is what conveyed by many in the media. The old Tea Party would not have been capable of turning out a plan for job creation that matches this.
