This is a thread to discuss the 9/22/2011 GOP debate hosted by Fox News & Google. In time for 2012, we will have a unique new feature ready to better track all election debates.

As part of this, we will have special threads and forums created for people to discuss the debate before, during and afterwards.

So this thread is for the debate on 9/22/2011.

I didn't watch the debate, but I note that one of the headlines tonight is the audience response to a question asked by Steven Hill, a gay soldier serving in Iraq, to Rick Santorum. The Fox News audience booed the gay soldier . The Huffington Post reported:

"Of course, the big news of the exchange will once again be about an audience reaction. After Fox cut back from the clip of Hill, several members of the audience were heard, in a shocking demonstration of disrespect for one of our soldiers, lustily booing him. Very sad."

And the audience also cheered when Santorum said he would reinstate DADT. Yes I agree...sad and disturbing.

Just watched the debate highlights.

A terrifying journey into Right-wing America.

Just bizarre.

Gary Johnson was probably the most mentally stable and well-collected, and I still cringed with nearly everything he had to say.

Bachmann speaks to every low-info kooky right wing nut job in the country. If she's not crazy, she's really, really twisted. Her voice alone has some evil power to it.

Where's Roemer?

The only Republican left was not invited. These are not Republicans. They are the Party of the Big Darkness. And they are Revanchists and Nihilists, not conservatives and libertarians.

2012 will be wackier and weirder than I ever imagined.
Each of us should do everything in our power to make sure nobody who was up on that stage tonight wins.

It appears from some media pundits, that they are ready to send Perry back to the Texas cow pastures..."worse than Bush." So will the Christian evangelicals get behind Mitt Romney? Will Romney have to do like McCain and choose a Christian evangelical for his VP ticket? I personally can't see Romney and Perry working together nor Romney and Bachmann.  Perhaps a Romney-Huckabee ticket in 2012?

But getting back to my earlier posting about the audience booing the question by the gay soldier in Iraq.  The candidates cannot control what remarks or catcalls are made from the audience.  But they can immediately push back as McCain did in 2008 at one of his town hall meetings when a supporter questioned Obama's birth place.

An approprate response by any one of the candiates might have been.  "Sir we honor your service to the country regardless of your sexaul preferences.  We condemn those in the audience that might want to tarnish that service just because you are gay."

But no...no one spoke out, other than Santorum's convoluted response saying he would reinstall DADT.  The other candidates chose silence rather than defend the honor of a gay soldier serving in Iraq.
