In responding to Zach's thread on Fareed Zakaria, I used the term "liberal pragmatist."  But then I started wondering, "Is there such a person as a "conservative pragmatist" in Congress today.  Can anyone name one?

In my superficial view, if Congress was full of liberal pragmatists and conservative pragmatists, we would be making enormous progress using compromise for every piece of legislation.  But it takes two to compromise. And the views on taxes seems to be the biggest divide. Social issues based on religious views are also much more in play than in the past.

So are there any conservative pragmatists on the Super Committee or in Congress in general?

Here's an Outside the Beltway commentary entitled "Pragmatic Conservatism?" to help stimulate your thinking.

I don't have any deep insight or answers into this...that's why I posed the question.

The problem with the political system in America is not pragmatism, it is lack of religious thought. I am a Christian. The word "christian" means "Christ-like". It has nothing to do with religion, in the fact that you don't have be a so-called church member to be one. I would call the Dahli-Lama a christian. A christian tries to live his life as if christ was in control of his/her actions, words, and deeds. Christ stood for and defended the poor, sick, old, young, hungry, crippled, and the down-trodden. He fought against the rich and the powerful. There isn't 1 line in the Bible where Jesus defended or supported the rich and the powerful. From what I have witnessed, the only party to show that they are christians are the Democrats, lncluding President Obama. The only reason President Obama signed the lengthening of the Bush tax cuts was to get unemployment compensation extention, not to help the rich.
But, so far, no one in the media will ask any republican a key question which begs asking: If you are a christian, why are you hurting those people Jesus stood for, and helping those people He fought against? One can't say you believe in Jesus, and then work to destroy everything he fought for. The so-called Christian Republicans can't have it both ways. When dealing with God, everything is absolute. By their own actions, these Republicans have damned their own souls. There is NO grey area. The only way to redemption is to undo what they have done.
