Paul LePage has stated outright that he is against legalizing same-sex marriages. However, he has also voiced his support for civil unions. He says that anyone (hetero/homo/trans) who is married by that state should have a legally recognized civil a civil uinion and share benefits of that title.

Reading this got me thinking that maybe, from a legal standpoint, we should do away with the term marriage. Marriage has so many religious undertones that get people in a zealous frenzy. Could switching all instances of the word marriage to civil union be a viable solution for everyone?
