The
American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC)
has been in the news lately...but not really. It depends on your news sources. The mainstream media is lacking. So I'll call your attention to two current articles:
ALEC Exposed: The Koch Connection
, by the Nation, August 1, 2011
Parents United collection catalogs influence of secretive ALEC
by MinnPost.com, August 8, 2011
From The Nation
: "Hundreds of ALEC’s model bills and resolutions bear traces of Koch DNA: raw ideas that were once at the fringes but that have been carved into “mainstream” policy through the wealth and will of Charles and David Koch. Of all the Kochs’ investments in right-wing organizations, ALEC provides some of the best returns: it gives the Kochs a way to make their brand of free-market fundamentalism legally binding."
"ALEC and the Kochs often pursue parallel tracks. Just as ALEC “educates” legislators, Koch funding has helped “tutor” hundreds of judges with all-expenses-paid junkets at fancy resorts, where they learn about the “free market” impact of their rulings. But ALEC also operates like an arm of the Koch agenda, circulating bills that make their vision of the world concrete."
From MinnPost.com
: "Never heard of ALEC? Made up of corporations, right-wing think tanks and conservative lawmakers, the group is a driving force behind this year’s coordinated, all-out effort to push tectonic policy shifts through state legislatures throughout the country. ALEC’s chief victory ground this year was, of course, Wisconsin, where the governor and legislative leaders enjoyed strong ties both to ALEC and its corporate members."
I recommend both articles to understand how the Koch Brothers and other big corporations are working secretly behind closed doors to make legislation favorable to their corporations.
Me? I never heard of ALEC until a week ago. We should all be aware...
