Any rational person can see that global warming is a real and serious concern. Bernie Sanders has compared people who deny global warming to people who deny the holocaust. Is this a bit extreme or is the outright denial of the scientific proof comparable to denying the evidence of the holocaust?

I am constantly amazed at the capacity of human beings to deny anything that threatens their security.  I strongly believe that the denial of global warming by the conservative right wing is motavated by traditional short terrm greed (it would cost trillions to retool our global economy to green energy) .  Business always tries to avoid long term consequences for short term profits.  But the real magic show is how they managed to convince the people who have the most to lose that global warming is a hoax.  The comparison to holocaust denial is not as clear.  Everyone can see the staggering amount of evidence documenting the halocaust.  Its right there in your face.  Global warming is based on science and many uneducated people have a deep seeded fear of science.  Also the republicans have done a great job of tying the global warming issue to the biblical issues concerning evoloution and reproductive rights causing many to lump everything together into a belief that its all a plot against god's people.

The reason that corporations have been so successful in turning public opinion on Climate Change can be summed up in two words: Fox News.  The Guardian's condensation of the Rolling Stone article on Roger Ailes and Fox News reveals why.

Roger Ailes runs the most profitable – and therefore least accountable – head of the News Corp hydra. Fox News reaped an estimated profit of $816m last year – nearly a fifth of Murdoch's global haul...With its bare-bones newsgathering operation – Fox News has one-third of the staff and 30 fewer bureaus than CNN – Ailes generates profit margins above 50%. Nearly half comes from advertising and the rest is fees from cable companies. Fox News now reaches 100m households, attracting more viewers than all other cable news outlets combined, and Ailes aims for his network to "throw off a billion in profits".

According to recent polls, Fox News viewers are the most misinformed of all news consumers. They are 12 percentage points more likely to believe the stimulus package caused job losses, 17 points more likely to believe Muslims want to establish Sharia law in America, 30 points more likely to say that scientists dispute global warming, and 31 points more likely to doubt President Obama's citizenship. At the height of the healthcare debate, more than two-thirds of Fox News viewers were convinced Obamacare would lead to a "government takeover", provide healthcare to illegal immigrants, pay for abortions and let the government decide when to pull the plug on grandma. In fact, a study by the University of Maryland revealed that ignorance of Fox viewers actually increases the longer they watch the network. That's because Ailes isn't interested in providing people with information, or even a balanced range of perspectives. Like his political mentor, Richard Nixon, Ailes traffics in the emotions of victimisation.

So Climate Change is just one of the many issues in which Fox News spreads misinformation for profit.

The Guardian's lead on the article states: "Even Rupert Murdoch is afraid of Roger Ailes, the paranoid boss of Fox News. But 'the Chairman' is using his power to make Americans more rightwing, more ignorant and ever more terrified."

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but for those open minded Republicans that visit this website, it is time for reflection.
