Those that like to debate where the traditional categories of Democrats, Republicans and Libertarians stand on issues will usually get into heated arguments.  So enjoy this: The Pew Research Center has sought to break the traditional parties down into nine categories of political beliefs: Staunch Republicans, Main Street Republicans, Solid Liberals, New Coalition Democrats, Hard Pressed Democrats, Libertarians, Post-Moderns, Disaffecteds, and Bystanders.

It is interesting to read where each group stands on the issues, and I'll only highlight a couple of points for the benefit of those that like to debate and understand the great divide we have in our political discourse today:

"Staunch Conservatives take extremely conservative positions on nearly all issues – on the size and role of government, on economics, foreign policy, social issues and moral concerns. Most agree with the Tea Party and even more very strongly disapprove of Barack Obama’s job performance."

"On the left, Solid Liberals express diametrically opposing views from the Staunch Conservatives on virtually every issue."

As we approach the vote to raise the debt ceiling, we can expect the Staunch Republicans (inclusive of most Tea Partiers) to exert their passionate influence to shut down the government unless they get a long laundry list from their their pet political and religious ideologies approved. Many of the rest of the groups, despite their differing beliefs, will align to stop the government shutdown. Or is it just wishful thinking on my part?

Read the article and check the details in the Pew Research Poll link above.
