Look......while this was one hell of a blotchy moral, international law gray-area....and it would have served the administration well to have everyone in it shut the hell up until all the facts had been sorted out.......the resulting death of Osama bin Laden is a big all-round win for national security and politically for the Democrats. Desperately, the Republicans are trying to paint this as a Bush win, as if he's Mao Zedong to Obama's Hua Guofeng. Immediately, they started claiming that waterboarding KSM and his cohorts led to Osama's whereabouts.
First of all, they waterboarded him 183 times and he still didn't tell them the truth about these couriers that our people knew about. Torturing this guy was just plain stupid...it created far more problems then it was worth...and DONALD RUMSFELD has said that waterboarding had nothing to do with the trail that led to Osama's death!
The informed reference for attack now, with Rumsfeld having blown-up the torture argument, is that "the enhanced interrogation measures put in place by Bush" ...yadda yadda...led to Osama's trail. They also point to the fact that Guantanamo is still open..and the fact that the Military Tribunals have been revamped as evidence that Obama sees it their way.
It's the most convoluted and amateurish attempt at a counter attack that I have ever seen them make. Old-fashion police work led to Osama's trail....and it helps that they weren't creating work for themselves by having to sort through the false information illicited when you torture people. Fact of life...torturing people yields false information. Extracting information from people who don't want to tell you their secrets is a matter of brains over brawn, not brutality.
Secondly, Guantanamo's still open and Military Tribunals are being revamped because GOP cryptkeepers have taken over the Senate with the filibuster and too many swing-state democrats cannot survive a GOP ad calling them a "Jihad Liberal." Congress has blocked and rebuffed the president's attempts to close Guantanamo and hold civilian trials. For the GOP to claim that Obama sees it there way on Guantanamo and the Military Tribunals, that's like somebody grabbing your hand and smacking you with it, and saying don't hit yourself. They're like mind-terrorists intent on driving their opposition crazy. Simple fact remains 9/11 happened on Bush's watch and Osama was caught and killed by Obama. They don't have any national security credentials....they have none. Bush said Osama meant nothing to him...and he disbanded the CIA unit that had been charged with capturing him for 10 years.
Furthermore, Bush, Hilary, McCain, and Palin all scoffed and scorned Obama's campaign declaration that he would actively engage the enemy in Pakistan if he had to. They turned it into "Obama wants to Bomb Pakistan." And many Republicans made the same arguments that the liberal-left and the far right are making now: that this operation in Pakistan to kill/capture Osama was an illegal action .

So Obama owns this. This is his win. And he made several revisions to the plan that proved his worth as president.
As far as the illegality of this action is concerned....Congress by legislation and lack of action has given the president carte blanche on killing terrorists. And as far as it being an illegal international act of war, I think it's pretty clear....that Osama bin Laden is a man wanted for crimes against humanity and Pakistan's security forces were obviously protecting him.

I think the WH has got to let the media and governments look at the photos. I don't like "just trust us." That's what sounds like Bush to me. I understand that the photos should not be released to the public. But independent verification would help corroborate the WH version of events. Look, conspiracy theories contribute to a lot of schizophrenic break downs in this country....and in a nation with this many firearms...that's a real bad thing. The thing about conspiracy theories is they only lead to more conspiracy theories. The American people and the world need to know that Osama is dead. Show the reporters and foreign governments (sans cameras) the photos....and be done with it.
