"Back To Our Future: How the 1980s Explain The World We Live In Now" is a new book by David Sirota. I heard about this book while watching Rachel Maddow. Interesting concept that the pop culture referencing and political doings of the 1980's psychologically shaped our current mindset when it comes to handling international affairs today. He also goes into more trivial aspects of comparison, all of which sound pretty on point.

Anyone read it or heard of it; should I check it out?? I was born in the 80's but wouldn't say that I lived through them, kinda young. But, I know that most everyone here lived through them and probably remembers them quite well. So, is he right? Does that comparison make sense?

Actually each generation's mindsets or worldviews are shaped by their experiences. For those that lived through the Great Depression and two world wars, their views on life exhibit a certain frugality and caution...perhaps more risk averse in taking on debt. For my generation, the Vietnam war has left its mark with so many but in differing ways...those who served and then those who perhaps identify more with the Kent State protestors. The youth of the 80s experienced more prosperity but without the global conflicts and wars that influenced previous generations. It makes sense then that the media was a major influence on the 80s generation. However, that trend continues today with major media outlets playing a significant part in shaping peoples views. Where would public opinion be without a Fox News or Clear Channel...or alternatively what if MSNBC didn't exist and all media outlets were controlled by Rupert Murdoch clones?

Just some thoughts in thinking about how the masses have been controlled through propaganda over history.
