CNN report
this morning:
"More than 900 people were killed and about 700 were missing, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported. The number of dead is expected to rise as rescuers reach more hard-hit areas."
"In the town of Minamisanriku, 9.500 people are unaccounted for, Japan's Kyodo News Agency reported, citing local officials. That figure is about half the population of the town, which is located on the Pacific, the news agency said."
Looking at the videos and photos of how the tsunami swept far inland through low lying towns, it is not hard to imagine how so many people could be missing. The giant tsunami wave flows inland first and then retreats back out to sea pulling massive amounts of debris and people with it. For Minamisanriku to potentially lose half their population would be a disaster within the overall disaster.
