There has been a lot of talk about teachers unions lately. Many are arguing that teacher's unions are crippling the progress trying to be made in our education system by making it harder to demand more quality from our teachers and making it harder to punish and/or fire them. The other side of that though is that teacher's unions help protect our hard working teachers and make sure that this very important minority workforce gets proper pay, recognition and respect. What do you think? Are teacher's unions the problem or the solution, or both?

The concept of a union logically arises from workers who seek to better themselves from lower wages, horrible working conditions, and tyrannical employers. At least in theory there is nothing wrong with them, unless they are inherently anti individualist and care solely for dues and revenue and become the stereotype of the right. I think with regards to teachers unions rewarding mediocrity is unacceptable, though with our education system being abysmally low, incentives and low wages being the norm, and the bastardization of youth by popular culture its bound to be an uphill battle. Though the alternative of privitization is madness

I think that today's teachers are failing misserably (for the most part) because kids graduate (many of them just barely graduate) with little knowledge at all.  The can't complete a job application correctly or legibly.  Just listen to the way the talk and the words they use.
English has been totally missused as of late, i.e. redundancy, nonuse of adverbs, and dangling particples.  No I am not a teacher, but my mother is a retired teacher.  I have also noticed that people of all ages, especially those in the media have started saying things like "Its going to be more rainny tommorrow " and "Eat vegetables, they will make you more healthy."  Plus there are words that are just made up like boughten, oftener and expecially (my favorite).

I think that teachers must be held accountable for the quality of their teaching skills. I have nothing against unions as long as they don't protect the teachers whose skills are not up to par.  How much children learn depends on more than just the teachers. It depends on the parents taking an active role in their child's education.
