I haven't really paid much attention to Maine politics except as they pertain to Maine's moderate Republican Senators, Olympia Snow and Susan Collins.  Then I saw a headline this morning in the Huffington Post, Maine Gov. Paul LePage on BPA: Worst Case Is Some Women May Have Little Beards"

For those not familiar with BPA, Wikipedia states that "Bisphenol A, commonly abbreviated as BPA, is an organic compound with two phenol functional groups. It is used to make polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins, along with other applications. Known to be estrogenic since the mid 1930s, concerns about the use of bisphenol A in consumer products were regularly reported in the news media in 2008 after several governments issued reports questioning its safety, prompting some retailers to remove products containing it from their shelves. A 2010 report from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) raised further concerns regarding exposure of fetuses, infants and young children. In September 2010, Canada became the first country to declare BPA as a toxic substance. In the European Union and Canada BPA use is banned in baby bottles."

TreeHugger provides more info on BPA.

The Huffington Post article quotes Governor Paul LePage in the Bangor Daily News as saying that all he's heard is that "if you take a plastic bottle and put it in the microwave and you heat it up, it gives off a chemical similar to estrogen. So the worst case is some women may have little beards." LePage said he's not seen enough science to support a ban on bisphenol-A."

So just who is Paul LePage?  He is the newly elected Tea Party Republican governor of Maine who won with just 38.1 percent of the vote (there were five candidates in the field). LePage made headlines in his campaign when he told a group of fishermen at a GOP forum that he won't be afraid to tell President Barack Obama to "go to hell."

He been called "outspoken."  That's an understatement.  When he was criticized for refusing either to attend Martin Luther King, Jr. Day events or to meet with Maine representatives of the NAACP he said he would not be "held hostage" by special interest groups including the NAACP, and laughingly told a local news reporter, "Tell them they can kiss my butt."

Hey...this is the Tea Party guy.  What did you expect?  The corporate line on things like the BPA must be protected. So what if it results in women growing beards or your children developing health problems?

Thoughts?

Hey...there's more to Governor LePage.  The Portland Herald Press reported on January 25th that LePage sent to the Legislature's new Joint Select Committee on Regulatory Fairness and Reform proposals for "33 sweeping changes to environmental laws."

Among the 33 changes are "proposed zoning 10 million acres of northern Maine for development, repealing laws that require manufacturers to take back recyclable goods for disposal and reversing a ban on the use of a chemical [BPA] linked to cancer in children's products."

The Portland Herald Press reports that some of the governor's other proposals for environmental reform include:

• Making Maine's environmental laws conform to less stringent federal standards.

• Requiring a cost-benefit analysis for all rulemakings.

• Relaxing air emissions removal standards, especially for smaller projects.

• Replacing the BEP with a system of administrative judges who would hear appeals of state Department of Environmental Protection staff decisions.

• Allowing vertical building additions on sand dunes whether or not the entire building is on posts.

• Requiring the DEP to act within 30 days of receiving applications for site development permits.

So this is what the Koch Brothers backed Tea Party candidates are doing. I don't know if LePage got any money from the Koch brothers directly, but he is enacting many of the things that the Koch brothers have championed through their astro-turf organizations like Americans for Prosperity.  This is it folks...the Tea Party in action.
