I felt real good and happy for the people of Egypt joining in their jubilation of unseating Mubarak in a Gandhi style non-violent revolution that should be a model for other protests over dictatorships. I thought most all Americans would embrace their efforts, but as I scrolled the news I found one that didn't - Rush Limbaugh.

Media Matters called attention to Rush's take on the protesters. Rush describes them as a "rent-a-mob...they're all leftists, they're feminists, avowed socialists, communists, and environmentalists." Furthermore, the protests were "not spontaneous" but rather "classic community organizing in Egypt"..."that's why Obama is trying to connect himself to it."

Rush just can't seem to find good in anything. He just has to twist the message. Is he competing with Glenn Beck's One World conspiracy theory of a Muslim Caliphate?

Both Limbaugh and Beck seem to hate more than anyone else in the media...and so many people listen and agree. That's what is really scary.

Rush Limbaugh flunked out of college, and Glenn Beck never even started. Sarah Palin DID graduate from college, but she went to five different schools.

Last year, both Rush and Glenn each made over $30,000,000, and Sarah Palin made roughly $12 million in the year after she retired as governor. I don't think any of them are very smart people, but they're smart enough to have friends like Rupert Murdoch.

Thanks for the links. I haven't read the book, but I have spent time reading opinion pieces about Rush Limbaugh's appeal. One might think that much of his audience is uneducated, but it's just the opposite. According to Quantcast, for the 6 month period ending November 29th, Clear Channel viewers of the Rush Limbaugh program were 65 percent male, 39 percent over 50 (36 percent 35-49), 50 percent college graduate and an additional 21 percent with graduate school education, and 36 percent with an income over $100,000 (with 32 percent in the bracket $60,000 to $100,000).

This actually fits with some of the Rush Limbaugh avid listeners that I know...over 50 whiite guys with a college education and fairly well off financially. But I'll add the word "angry" to fill out the profile. And that is his niche that he appeals to so lucratively...the angry old white guy that feels threatened by the changes happening in American society. I would characterize them as very conservative...they abhor change...they like the status quo...they are old time or old school...and otherwise intolerant, authoritative, and close minded, to add a few more descriptives based on my personal experience in arguing with them and making zero headway. Now I also know a lot of old white guys (I'm one of them) that absolutely detest Rush Limbaugh so I don't want to stereotype that demographic as being Limbaugh supporters .

In any case, one only has to Google Media Matters, Rush Limbaugh to find a sampling of many of the outrageous things he has said that just about everyone should find offensive...except perhaps angry old white guys. I don't understand how any woman with self esteem can listen to "the old windbag" and his sexism. However, he has been married four times so I suppose that suggests something in that regard.

Some conservatives have called him an entertainer and I think that description also fits. He just has to entertain his niche audience telling them what they want to hear, and he makes tons of money doing it. Education is not a detriment in his appealing to one's hidden prejudices and fears. Stirring up the anger inhibits any kind of critical thinking. Rush manufactures and exploits anger very well.

And with free speech, he has every right to exploit this demographic for profit. Hopefully his brand of selling hate will wear thin one day and the populace will wake up. That may take a while.

Ha...Ha. Yes it fits his profile. I watched Archie Bunker in the All in the Family series back in the 1970s. The series wouldn't work with today's audience, but I still enjoy seeing and laughing at clips of the old shows, and YouTube has several.

So when the Muslim brotherhood takes control of Egypt, and the women who used to wear western clothes are no longer allowed, and Sharia Law is invoked, and the Coptic Christians are driven out or killed, will that be better than Mubarak? Better the devil you know than the devil you don;t know. As far as the protesters go anybody could see they were not University students and factions in the Middle East are well known for their "orchastrating" of protests etc...the fact that a protest was held in Iran over anything should tell the story...the Irianian Gov't kills protesters!!

Egypt's population is about 90 percent Muslim, primarily Sunni. The other 10 percent are Coptic Christian. According to the CIA Fact book, ethnic Egyptians comprise 99.6 percent of the 82 million population. So it should not be surprising that the Muslim Brotherhood won the largest majority of seats in the first round of democratic elections still going on. But is that bad? Can that in anyway be worse than the oppresive rule of Mubarak? Or perhaps the more radical Nour Party? It is the Egyptian people deciding, and it doesn't matter what the outside world thinks or does. It is democracy in action.

As the Washington Post reports today (December 3rd): "The deputy head of the Brotherhood’s new political party, Essam el-Erian, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that the group is not interested in imposing Islamic values on Egypt, home to a sizable Christian minority and others who object to being subject to strict Islamic codes.

“We represent a moderate and fair party,” el-Erian said of his Freedom and Justice Party. “We want to apply the basics of Shariah law in a fair way that respects human rights and personal rights,” he said, referring to Islamic law.

"The comments were the clearest indication that the Brotherhood was distancing itself from the ultraconservative Islamist Nour Party, which appears to have won the second-largest share of votes in the election’s first phase. The Nour Party espouses a strict interpretation of Islam similar to that of Saudi Arabia, where the sexes are segregated and women must be veiled and are barred from driving."

Furthermore, from the Muslim Brotherhood website:

The Muslim Brotherhood's Imam el-Banna states that "Islam is a comprehensive program that encompasses all aspects of life...a civic state, i.e. a state of institutions, based on the principles of constitutional government."

“The principles of constitutional government consist of: maintaining all kinds of personal freedom, consultation and deriving authority from the people, responsibility of the government before the people and its accountability for its actions, and the clear demarcation of power of each branch of government."

"We consider our Coptic brothers as citizens enjoying all rights associated with citizenship and as part of the fabric of the Egyptian society. We consider them as partners in the country, in decision-making and in determining our future. Consequently, the basis for filling public posts shall be efficiency, ability and experience, not religion or beliefs."

Sounds like they want the billions of dollars the U.S. has been giving Egypt to keep flowing...talk is cheap...time will tell...they have elections in Russia too...

Who is they? The USA gives $1.55 billion in foreign aid to Egypt, and $1.3 billion of it goes directly to the military. That, of course, could change.

Israel by the way receives $3.175 billion, of which $2.775 billion goes to the military.

Military is big business...it's the way we conduct diplomacy. It's also a big export item for America.

since Israel is the only democratic country in the region , protection against un-democratic forces, whether they be communist, marxist or Islamist should be protected by other democratic countries, even if it costs more...

Israel is not a democracy. Ilan Pappé is a professor with the College of Social Sciences and International Studies at the University of Exeter in the UK, director of the university's European Centre for Palestine Studies, co-director of the Exeter Centre for Ethno-Political Studies, and political activist. His books include A Modern History of Palestine, The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine and Gaza in Crisis (with Noam Chomsky).

I'll quote from his interview with Middle East Monitor: Why Israel is Not a Democracy.

No, Israel is definitely not a democracy. A country that occupies another people for more than 40 years and disallow them the most elementary civic and human rights cannot be a democracy. In fact Israel is, what we use to call in political science a herrenvolk democracy, its democracy only for the masters. The fact that you allow people to participate in the formal side of democracy, namely to vote or to be elected, is useless and meaningless if you don't give them any share in the common good or in the common resources of the State, or if you discriminate against them despite the fact that you allow them to participate in the elections. On almost every level from official legislation through governmental practices, and social and cultural attitudes, Israel is only a democracy for one group, one ethnic group, that given the space that Israel now controls, is not even a majority group anymore, so I think that you'll find it very hard to use any known definition of democracy which will be applicable for the Israeli case.

I think anybody with any sense is happy for the people of Egypt...it's amazing how smoothly that went and I think that's to the credit of the Egyptian people. But seriously...can any thinking person stand to listen to Rush Limbaugh? Do you have a copy of Al Franken's book he wrote about him back in the 90s I think? It's hysterically funny.

This is funny. I just replied to someone else about Al Franken's book that I bought back in the 90s. LOL I'll be sure to check out yours too because I've spent a couple of decades now detesting Rush...and the Grinch. Only a republican could leave congress in disgrace, stay in the background for a few years and come back to run for president.

Although I've heard some rumors that my ideas were "were not exactly" correct, Nick Kristof's column in the New York Times yesterday gives a more accurate (and personal) description of the group:
