I was listening to a very interesting exit polling from Tuesday on NPR, stating that over 40% on Americans consider themselves independents and many more Democrats and Republicans are dissatisfied. Are you dissatsfied and does this mean that an independent has a better chance of winning elections now?

I'm dissatisfied to an extent. My core beliefs are liberal though so I will always vote left. I think that alot of the "independent" responses (in polls of this sort) are because of ...... how can I say this ..... fear of commitment maybe. Its not possible for some people to take an (perceived or actual) unpopular stand.
I'm dissatisfied because I see no commitment to liberal values from our supposedly liberal leaders. (There are exceptions of course) While I will stand behind the democrats I must say that some of the "compromises" we have given up are no compromise at all but outright capitulation. The tax cuts for example. It was shameful for the republicans to hold the poor and middle classes hostage so the very rich could get their little extra. It was shameful , for me, to see our President cave in on that. Rarely in political life has a more perfect and BLANTANT example of republican special interests been seen. Do we make political capitol of it? No..... we roll over.
So yes..... I AM dissatisfied but will remain Democratic.

Polls are tricky. I wonder just how accurate a number like 40% is.. I think that could possibly be the pulse of people today and for the reason that you mentioned, being dissatisfied. Whether you go conservative or liberal on a major of issues, indianacarnie is absolutely right, there is a lack of running politicians to take stances on any "real" polarizing issue. Or they take a stance on the issue only to fold like a cheap deck of cards when in office, seemingly to one lobbyist or interest group or another.
As a libertarian or independent or whatever label that fits better (still not exactly sure) it mostly feels like picking the lesser of the 2 evils when picking between the big two. But, I have always sided with Democrats in the end. Democrats, on the whole, seem to have a better understanding of what we are trying to do here. Run a nation for the people and BY the people. I do not always agree with their ideals, but there hearts are usually in the right place. Can NOT say the same about Republicans.
I really do wish the voting few would seriously consider a third party independent stance on things. To understand that a person running can be liberal on some issues and conservative on others. I feel that most people actually are. Voters too, though have to pick a side. Because, well, they really have no other choice unless they want to just throw their vote away.
