I was watching an interesting lecture by Sam Harris in which he briefly brings up the topic of corporal punishment in schools. He states that allowing it to occur is clearly a relic of religion (spare the rod and spoil the child type of thing) and is not in the best interest of society.

It made me think about corporal punishment as a whole. Is it a product of religion?

If so, could corporal punishment in schools be considered a violation of separation of church and state?

Here is a link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hj9oB4zpHww
I will also be posting a forum based solely on the topic of science and morality.

Let me know your thoughts.
