I know that there is another forum started regarding the recent Arizona shooting, but I wanted to start one specifically aimed toward the topic of gun control.

Do you think that this tragedy will have any effect of current gun control laws?

Let me know your thoughts.

If someone's child had posted a hit list like Sarah Palin's then they would be arrested at school for this kind of action. But because it is a political figure there is no accountability, nor would it be used as a reason for gun control. Here is the hypocrisy, Sarah can post a "hit list", but your child would be arrested. How can you expect gun control to come from that mentality?

Every time there is a shooting that makes the news, gun laws come into debate. The left and right clash and bring up all the same talking points. It will make the news for a while, and just like all the other violent stories, we will forget about it and move on. Nothing will happen. And, I'm not saying that anything should happen. In fact, its better if nothing happens. We need to act on premeditated logic, not knee jerk reactionary emotions.

I agree that we will hear a lot of hype about tightening gun ownership laws in the next few weeks and months.  But I also agree that nothing much will happen of substance, if anything at all.  However, this much I do know.  Whenever a tragic event like this happens it is good for gun sales.  According to this Huffington Post article by Jason Linkins, "days after a madman went on a murdery rampage with a Glock in Arizona, Arizonans are heading to gun stores in droves to purchase the very same weapon used by Jared Lee Loughner. It's as good an example as anything to demonstrate that there really is no such thing as bad publicity, only an inplacable, gnawing cynicism that permeates our existence and sends us, sobbing, into a fetal position."

"One-day sales of handguns in Arizona jumped 60 percent on Jan. 10 compared with the corresponding Monday a year ago, the second-biggest increase of any state in the country, according to Federal Bureau of Investigation data."

This is not unusal.  The same thing happened in 2007 the day after the Virginia Tech massacre in which 32 people were killed.

I doubt whether many of those new gun owners would even know how to use their weapons...or would use them without accidently shooting others.  And for many of them, the gun ownership will invite tragedy.

According to the Children's Defense Fund, "The latest data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that 3,184 children and teens died from gunfire in the United States in 2006—a 6 percent increase from 2005. This means one young life lost every two hours and 45 minutes, almost nine every day, 61 every week."

The number of children and teens in America killed by guns in 2006 would fill more than 127 public school classrooms of 25 students each. And more preschoolers (63) were killed by firearms than law enforcement officers (48) killed in the line of duty.

We can only wish I'm afraid. Money talks in Washington and nobody spends like the NRA, except maybe the Health Industry. We need real politicians in D.C. instead of mere lobbyists , which is what we have now. Theres no reason anyone needs 4 or 5 pistols! Theres no reason for ANYONE to have assault rifles! Why does anyone need a 30 round magazine for ANY weapon not in a theater of war? If you ain't hit that deer by then, you ain't agonna git it!

We need to eliminate 36 round clips for handguns.......they will not be of any use during a rebellion against the federal government..and they are only for criminals and insane people.....

I believe in the right to bear arms....I just don't believe the 2nd Amendment is incorporated under the 14th Amendment...it's a limitation on Congress and it's not absolute....Constitutionally, States should be able to ban guns outright.  I would advise against it, but I believe States should have that right.

This is in regards to Sarah Palin:  She has finally gone too far.  Thank goodness the true Sarah Palin has been exposed.  The "blood libel" quote has hurt her terribly.  She has finally been exposed for the radical she is.  Now maybe she has been exposed and we can be rid of her.  Next, Glen Beck, PLEASE!!!!!!
