The Army's top general said recently that a policy banning women from combat arms units could soon be revised.

"We're looking at revising the policy," Gen. George W. Casey Jr. told a breakfast gathering of the Association of the U.S. Army in Arlington, Va. "We've had some work going on for a while, and that'll double back up to the secretary, I would think, in the next couple of months."

If the Army actually did overturn the ban on women in combat units in that time-frame, it could beat the ongoing integration of openly gay soldiers into all regular units military-wide

As a veteran (and proud of my service) I can only say that both of these policies are window dressing that calms our wingnut segment. And harms innocent people as an by-product. There have been gays in all branches of ANY military for as long as there has been military formations.

As for women in combat units, let me very clear on this, EVERYONE in a combat theater of operations is in a "combat unit". If you wear your countries uniform in Afghanistan,Iraq or anywhere else where people are wanting to harm you BECAUSE of the uniform you wear, then you are in a COMBAT situation. A bullet or bomb will kill you just as fast at battalion headquarters or the quartermasters depot as it will on a combat patrol.

This country, army reserves its highest accolades and honors for the soldiers on the nominal frontlines and if we exclude women from being eligible for these accolades/honors then we are limiting their ability to "rise to the top" in their chosen profession.
