The newest addition to The Chronicles of Narnia movies is set to come out on December 10th. C.S. Lewis is well known for his books on religion.

Many think that the Narnia books contain many religious symbols. For Example, each book is said to focus on one of the 7 deadly sins. The Lion, The Which, and The Wardrobe is focused on Gluttony.

Alsan is said to be a direct representation of Jesus. In the same manor, the White Witch is said to be a demon or possibly even Satan himself.

Did anyone (who wasn't already aware of the motives of the author) notice these themes in any of the books or movies?

I am just wondering how prevelant the religious message is to the average reader/viewer.

My daughter and I saw the first Narnia movie. I didn't really think it was overtly religious. A lot of Christians read their beliefs into it, but then again, about half of the movie's themes come from Pagan mythology--minotaurs, magic, and I think there are satyrs, too. It seemed most like a furry Lord of the Rings.

It was okay, but not my favorite movie. I never got into the book as a kid, either. I don't like how the "bad guy" is a witch. Witches have been vilified enough throughout history. I'm not necessarily opposed to female villains (why should women have to be good all the time?) but I didn't like that the villian in the books and movies is a female and a witch because I feel it's misogynistic. Was C.S. Lewis a misogynist? I don't know, but I get the impression that he, like many of his generation, was afraid of women and projected negative crap from his own psyche onto them (probably unconsciously.) I could be reading too much into this. Sometimes a book is just a book.

We didn't see the second movie, but my daughter said she may go see the latest movie with her friend. She isn't concerned about missing out on the plot. She just wants to see it because she thinks the actor who plays the prince is hot.

A movie that I'd like to see a sequel to is The Golden Compass. Religious fanatics made a big stink about it when it came out because they think it (and the book it's based on) is anti-religious. That's one of the things I liked best about it! It showed how people can use religion to dupe others. I hope the producers haven't been delaying production of the sequel to Golden Compass because of the ranting of the religious extremists.
