Abstinence only sex education is a part of a religious agenda. In our case, Christianity is that religion.  They believe that any education of the act of sex, even safe sex, will have kids committing the sin of premartial relations.  That's what it boils down to in my estimation.

My question is should a public school system mandate morality on sex? There are only two ways to do it: tell kids not to have sex, think about sex, or even talk about it until marriage under God.  Or, educate kids on what sex is, how to have it safely, and the real dangers of STD's, teen pregnancy, etc.

Shouldn't we have an open forum on all things taboo with our kids, being that they are the next generation.  I mean, everyone is going to have sex sooner or later.  We have to propagate the species, ya know?  So, let's have an open, honest and intelligent dialogue with our youth.   Anyone disagree?  Am I forgetting or overlooking something?  I would love to hear your comments..

To teach only abstinence for "sex education" is a totally inane policy. Kids are GOING to think about/experiment with sex. In our society theres NO WAY to remove sex from day to day life. (Advertising etc.) Pretending that sex is not a part of life will only produce a lot of mixed up kids who will turn into mixed up adults.
Maybe these 'christians" who want all things sexual swept under the rug ought to preach/teach their abstinence to their preachers! (think taggert, bakker et al.)

One problem America has is that there is a phobia of teaching teens anything about sex. When we get over that we can teach what sex is (if someone's getting off, it's sex), what the consequences are (STDs, babies, fun, really awkward next mornings), how to do it safely (condoms, birth-control, how to avoid getting into and dealing with a destructive relationship) and open the floor for questions. Issues of absence and morality should be left to the parents.
