Let's start a forum discussion on this topic. What are the current main talking points for and against stemcell research?

This is an emotional topic with much misinformation thrown around as fact. Many religious people are emphatically opposed to any form of embryonic stem cell research by anyone, anywhere. It is impossible to have a pros and cons discourse with them because it's the same as arguing the merits of their religious beliefs.
Federal District Judge Royce Lamberth's on August 23rd overturned Obama's executive order by granting a preliminary injunction to halt all federally funded embryonic stem cell research. Laura Bothwell discusses this injunction in the
Bioethics Forum, (Sep 13, 2010)
.
Bothwell's article provides a balanced look at the pros and cons of embryonic stem cell research.
"Opponents of embryonic stem cell research posit that spare embryos are people who deserve the same human rights and social protections afforded to babies who have been born. Some have argued that it would be morally appropriate to force couples to implant all created embryos; however, this would introduce particular pregnancy dangers associated with multiple gestations."
"On the other hand, a moral argument in favor of human embryonic stem cell research maintains that the spare embryos exist because technology has enabled more couples to become parents, creating more human lives than we would otherwise have. It is a great gift to humanity that the embryos left over from the assisted reproduction cycles can be used for research that has the potential to alleviate human suffering. According to this position, endowing spare embryos with the status of human beings fabricates a difficult and unnecessary set of social and moral obligations.
"
Bothwell concludes that "To suspend research on account of irreconcilable belief systems would concede victory to opponents of research." Read Bothwell's article in the Bioetheics Forum for a fuller understanding of the issues. Those opposed to embryonic stem cell research on religious grounds will not agree with her. But I do.
