Are you getting tired of all the manufactured hype around the the building of an Islamic Center near the World Trade Center in New York?  The Republican Party leaders, true to form, have politicized this plan in the hopes of forcing Democrats into uncomforatable positions. They control the message, and the corporate media obliges, forcing the Democrats to squirm and bend.  But why should they? The bottom line is that the right wing is not attacking Islam but rather the First Amendment to the Constitution.  The Republicans know that full well. This is all about politics and appealing to their base...that part of their base that tolerates bigotry.

Keith Olbermann in his Special Comment, There is No 'Ground Zero Mosque'  tonight has done an admirable job of exposing the right wing lies and prejudices, and questioning their real motives. If you want the real truth and have time, watch Keith's Special Comment.

Finally, I have to ask why this story has so much coverage in the media?  Natural disasters in Pakistan and important legislation are pushed aside while the media covers this story non-stop. This seems to be their modus operandi.  Sensationalize some stories at the expense of more important news.  If it hadn't been for the right wing bloggers, this story would not have even made the back pages of the Washington Times. Nevertheless, there it is in the headlines every day...day after day in every newspaper and TV news outlet. Poor Lindsay Lohan...missing out again.

Change.org Weekly sent me this summary of the hype around the New York mosque in their weekly e-mail

This past week a simmering controversy over the construction of an Islamic community center two blocks from the World Trade Center reached a boiling point across the country.

Republican politicians leading the charge against the center have dubbed it "Ground Zero Mosque," creating the misconception that the hallowed ground of the Twin Towers is being built over and stoking dangerous anti-Muslim fears.

The reality is much more benign: The center, conceived by a Muslim leader known for his interfaith work with the Bush Administration after 9/11 and founded with the mission of spreading religious understanding and tolerance, will provide a swimming pool, auditorium, restaurants, and other spaces open to the community, and is to be built on the site of a former Burlington Coat Factory.

Those fighting against the center have cloaked themselves in the banner of patriotism. But there is nothing patriotic about blocking the right to religious freedom. As New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg has said, "The ability to practice your religion was one of the real reasons America was founded."

Mayor Bloomberg, who grew up surrounded by anti-Semitism and knows what it feels like to be a target of religious discrimination, reports that all the families of 9/11 victims he has spoken with have been supportive of the building. Referring to the victims, Bloomberg says, "We do not honor their lives by denying the very Constitutional rights they died protecting. We honor their lives by defending those rights - and the freedoms that the terrorists attacked."

The decision of whether the Islamic center should be allowed to go forward as planned won't impact just one building; it will be seen as a sign of whether America can make peace with Islam.

In the wake of the controversy in New York City, Islamic centers and mosques have been subjected to protests and harassment by right-wing groups across the country. Protestors have shouted that "Jesus hates Muslims" and called Muslim children entering day care centers "murderers." The Christian Dove World Outreach Center has renamed 9/11 "International Burn a Koran Day," and Bryan Fischer of the right-wing American Family Association says that we should not allow "even one more mosque in the United States of America."

This is a defining moment for the country. Will we stand strong in support of our principles of religious freedom and tolerance, or will we succumb to hate and ignorance and fear?

Generations of Americans have shed blood to protect our First Amendment right to religious freedom for a reason. Let us not easily forget that.

The Rightwing needs to stop telling New Yorkers what to do with their city....its entirely disrespectful....after all, it was their Phony Little Rich kid, George W.  Bush,  who demoted Richard Clarke..ignored warning after warning....did nothing about the Cole bombing...and told Clinton, Iraq was a greater threat than Al-Qaeda. If Al Gore was President in 2001,  9/11 wouldn't have happened ....we would not be having this debate.

Never turn your back on fear. It should always be in front of you, like a thing that might have to be killed. "

Well in this case it is manufactured fear....just like all the other stuff put out by the right wingers and elevated to headlines by Fox News and the New York Post.  Salon.com researched the origins of the story to Pam Keller.  You can read what they say in their article, How the 'ground zero mosque' fear mongering began. I'll extract one paragraph:

In a story last week, the New York Times, which framed the project in a largely positive, noncontroversial light last December, argued that it was cursed from the start by "public relations missteps." But this isn't accurate. To a remarkable extent, a Salon review of the origins of the story found, the controversy was kicked up and driven by Pamela Geller, a right-wing, viciously anti-Muslim, conspiracy-mongering blogger, whose sinister portrayal of the project was embraced by Rupert Murdoch's New York Post.

Go ahead and Google "Pamela Geller" and you'll find all kinds of similar past antics by Geller on the first page of Google. This is just one of the many hate mongers that Rupert Murdoch hides behind in bringing you ""fair and balanced news." If it's not a mosque at ground zero, it's a false story about an Acorn employee soliciting teenage prostitutes, or a false story about Shirley Sherrod being a rascist, or a false story on White House aide Vann Jones....and yaddah, yaddah, yaddah. This is what Rupert Murdoch does.  This is his trademark. He uses people like Pamela Geller to promote hate and rage.

And he makes tons of money doing it.

Ho hum,

Bottom line on the controversy surrounding the Park51 project, or "the groundzero mosque":   The Children of the Corn are endangering the Troops.

Over the last few days,  my thoughts have turned to Grant's words to Sherman, over the use of black troops during the Civil War.  Sherman, who had command over Freed slaves and volunteer black auxiliary units, did not want to put them in battle, believing they were only useful for manual labor.  But he had not seen what Grant had.  He had not seen what they were capable of, when they had been drilled, trained, and equiped for battle.  Sherman had no time to train them:  he was busy kicking the South's ass, there was no time for screwing around.  He was McClellan with balls, a tactical master willing to bring the South to its knees for its traitorous cause, and nothing could be left to chance in pursuit of those efforts; black soldiers were a major risk, as far as he was concerned in his oldschool racist opinion.

But Grant knew better, telling William Tecumseh Sherman that he was wrong, something few men in their day could have had the capacity to do, I believe it was something along the lines of 'WE WILL GAIN A GREAT AND NOBLE ALLY.'  And these words are everso pertinent today.

Many support the rights of lawabiding Muslims to go forward with the Park51 plans, but they criticize the wisdom of the location, and even the President has tried to layer his support on these grounds to protect himself from the backlash of the public's rather awful opinions.

But I say, that the project is in our national strategic security interests; those against it are endangering the troops with their ignorance, lies, and fear.  We should protect, assist, and encourage Muslims when they stand up against extremism; and the Park51 project demonstrates this country's unyielding commitment to isolating the extremist element as our enemy,  instead of the broader whole of Islam.

BUILD THE DAMN MOSQUE!

Yes! We have the right to build the shrine to our matyrs who killed the infidels!  These fear mongerers who supposedly are for freedom do not practice what they preach.  They want to squash our freedoms. For this, they must be humiliated.  Them showing intolerance in having they're noses rub in our victory is unconstitutional.  We demand our constitutional rights! Our Muslim forefathers who died in fighting for these freedoms are rolling over in their graves right now.

Guten tag,

You rightwingers should start writing in your native German.  I'm tired of you people screwing up the English language.  And yes, Thomas Jefferson and Madison thought it right to protect the rights of the Mohammedan, even after they found about the beheadings going on in Tripoli, during their encounters with the Barbary States.
Your ignorance of Sufi Islam jeapordizes our strategic security interests, and people like you bring profound shame to this country.  You're not a Christian.  You're not a Republican.  You're not a conservative.  And your really, really not a libertarian.   You're a Know-Nothing......and you're jeapordizing the lives of my friends who have been in-and-out of sand boxes for almost a decade now.
We will gain a Great and Noble Ally....Grant to Sherman.

Sorry, not German, not a right winger, African/Irish and definitely libertarian. I see  A POSER that cannot intellectually respond. Thus, kill the messenger.  Name call. Straight from the Book...of Beck.  Closet are we?  Can I get some of that sweet rhetoric?  Use Thomas Jefferson and Madison, laughable. Label misuse of the Enlish language with no specifcs, because there is none. State they are ignorant, state they jeopordize our strategic interest, again with no specifics. Build the Damn Shrine. I abhor your idiot rant, but I respect you rigt to be an idiot.  My African/Irish Muslin forefathers died for your right. Sorry your friends have been in and out of sand boxes. My FAMILY has...The Mosque will never be. Get use to the idea Kaboom.  What does the Kaboom mean? I know, another violence threatener.  Bill Ayres? Is that you?

He was also known for his unrepentant lifelong use of alcohol, LSD, mescaline, and cocaine (among other substances); his love of firearms, and his iconoclastic contempt for authoritarianism. After a long bout of health problems, he committed suicide at age 67 in 2005.

Ho hum,

1.  I assumed it was okay to joke around about identities, because of the nature of your intial faux post....I'm sorry if I offended you by assuming you were German.  And I apologize to anyone of German descent who may have been offended.  I did this to  demonstrate the ridiculousness of excluding fellow Americans on account of foreign distinctions and discriminating against them for things completely out of their control that they are not responsible for.
2.  Libertarians believe in religious freedom.  Calling yourself a libertarian doesn't make you a libertarian.
3.  I'm certainly no supporter of Beck.  That is truly #$%@ing hilarious.
4.  What "African/Irish Muslin"  forefathers do you keep talking about?  That's not laughable.  Maybe you're not familar with the debate, but many argue over Jefferson and Madison views towards Muslims, in regards to first amendment freedoms.....Do you know why Marines are called Leatherknecks?  It's because they were worried about the Marines getting their heads cut off by the strange and savage Mohammedans in Tripoli, so  they extended a leather guard up-around their kneck.  But Jefferson and Madison did not issue a call to ban Islam or burn the Koran.
5.  As far as your writing is concerned...I don't know...re-read your own goddamned posts, maybe this time with a friend.  You can't seem to spell 'English' correctly, but the funny thing is....I've seen far worse.  Your writing is quite intelligible compared to the other Lizard Beast-influenced saboteurs on this website.
6.  Sufi Muslims are our friends.  Many of them are American citizens.   And Al-queda likes to blow them up.   We need to build strong partnerships with our allies in the Muslim world.  And it does not serve our interests when we refer to all Muslims as the enemy, and start harrassing fellow American citizens with hatred of their religion.
7.  When I see my country giving way to the BIG DARKNESS , I go Kaboom...but I believe the pen is mightier than the sword.  My friends gave me the name as an add-on to the title of 'El Prezidente,' which was given to me by the illegal immigrant kitchen staff at my work for my support of their rights as human beings.

I'm not Bill Ayers...but you might be Timothy McVeigh.

I got to say, just this "Republican Islamophobia" is at least as much as a fabrication of the Left.  This thread is silliness, tattered with rude insults of American people and a former President.

I personally do not care what New York does.  But Leftists are telling New Yorkers who happen to disagree that they are racists for having opinions.

The thing about labeling people is that you don't have to put a face to the "race" tag.  It could be your neighbor or kind stranger.

Shameful.

Is this a joke?
What exactly are we fabricating.....

First off, Islam is a religion, not a race...and yes I do think that many rightwingers are prejudice against Muslims, even hateful.  And yes, some of the protests against the mosque feature bigots, who are not the brightest of individuals, if you know what I mean.

As far as insulting a former American president is concerned...your side has got room to talk, sir.

Rightwingers just don't happen to disagree with building the mosque,  like they just happen to have taken a shit in the morning,  they have reasons for their position,  many of which are cruel, viscious, and dead-wrong.

And I can't believe what I have heard coming from the rightwing on this issue....at this hour of the war....after everything we've been through....with what's at stake....with what's in reach....and with what it has and will continue to all cost.  How dare they give our enemies what they need; how dare they aid and abet the enemy with false controversy that provides their propogandists with a p.r. victory; how dare they openly declare that America is hostile to the whole of Islam.  This is self-harm.  It's madness.  We are better than this.  YOU ARE BETTER THAN THIS.

Oh, but what's the point?  When has someone with a negative view of Democrats, expressed their dissent in a thoughtful, innocent way on this website? Or even laid out their position in intelligible sentances?  They are not interested in dialouge.  They are interested in destruction.  And their addiction to chaos, has led them to pursue typing useless garbage on our Democratic website in their spare time.
Well if they want to squabble with me, like their President Peanut-head said, Bring it On, .....but I still believe, that there are conservatives and Republicans out there with their heads still screwed on....and I'm hoping one day, one of them responds, and we can have an intelligent conversation.

BUILD THE DAMN MOSQUE
SUPPORT SUFI ISLAM
SUPPORT OUR ALLIES IN THE MUSLIM WORLD
SUPPORT RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE
SUPPORT THE FIRST AMENDMENT
SUPPORT THE TROOPS

This what I believe, and I'm an American and a human being; and may God strike me down with furious anger, if these beliefs are shameful.
