It has been long enough since gay marriage has not been legalized through out the entire country. First, any couple who choose to love each other and live together as a team should be given the same rights as any other couple.
Some of those benefits that gays are missing out on because the federal definition is not as inclusive as it needs to be are:
Tax Benefits
- being able to file joint tax returns
-creating a family partnership, which would allow one to divide business income among family members
Estate Planning Benefits
-inheriting your share from your spouse's estate
-the exemption on estate taxes or gift taxes for all property from or to your spouse
-the ability to create certain life estate trusts that are only restricted to married couples
-the priority of answering on decisions for your spouse if they cannot for medical reasons
Government Benefits
-recieving social security, medicare, and disability benefits for spouses if they pass
-recieving veteran's and military benefits for spouses, including education, medical care, and/or special loans
-recieving publice assistance benefits
Employment Benefits
-obtaining insurance benefits through your spouse's employer
-taking family leave to take care of your spouse during an ilness
-recieving wages, worker's compensation, and retirement plan benefits once spouse dies
-being able to take leave if one of your spouse's close relatives die
Medical Benefits
-visiting each other in a hospital intensive care unit or during restricted visiting hours
-being able to make medical decisions for your spouse
Death Benefits
-being able to decide about after death examinations and procedures
-making burial arrangements
Family Benefits
-filing together for joint adoption
-applying for joint foster care rights
-receiving the proper division of property if divorced
-receiving child support, custody, and/or visitation
Housing Benefits
-being able to automatically renew leases signed by spouse
-being able to live in neighborhoods that are zoned for families only
Consumer Benefits
-family rates for health, homeowners, and auto insurance
And yes there are more! Let's keep watch on California's prop 8 and Massachusetts challenge to the federal definition of marriage. Let's hope this ends soon.
