Drug testing on relfare recipients would be a waste of money

First, of all, drug testing welfare recipients is a state's choice. This means that there is currently no federal law regarding this and each state will make their own laws regarding this issue.

As of June 2009, Michigan was the only state to have enacted drug testing requirements of welfare recipients. Only 10% of people tested positive for drugs and only 3% test for hard drugs such as cocaine.  See article.

In this day an age, where marijuana is closer than ever to being legalized. Does it make sense to deny welfare to people who are on drugs, that 3%?

In reality, it will be more costly to run a drug testing program that will take into account false positives than to pay welfare out to the 3%.
