A poll, released on in California shows that a majority of them are in favor of the Arizona's SB1070 and it's tougher stance on illegal immigration. I was hoping to get some opinions of Californians on this one. California is on the front line of the immigration issue so I was hoping to get your takes on this controversial bill.

I wholeheartedly agree with AB1070, and would be thrilled if California would get off the dime and quit bashing Arizona for taking a much-needed stance on illegal immigration.  I have no problem with immigrants coming to our country, but they need to do it the legal way.  When we are footing the gigantic bill for these folks in this economy, something has to change.  I know of people who are losing jobs or not getting them because they don't speak Spanish.  The drug cartels have also taken over the lower part of Arizona up to Highway 8 and basically told everyone to stay out.  When has that become okay?  A huge part of the problem is that illegals are not assimilating like other cultures have when they've come to America.  It won't be long in California when it's press 1 for Spanish and 2 for English . . . in fact, I know a place it's already happened!!   There are so many reasons why this needs to stop, and I'm very sad that American citizen's rights are being placed on the back burner.  I have a relative who is married to a Mexican gal - she is one of 11 children.  The parents don't speak English, but they have been in this country for years.  He has a business doing hardscape work, and gets paid in cash . . . so ya think he's ever paid taxes???  I think not!  But they all know how to "work the system" and get  whatever they can for free.  It's really disgusting.  I don't mind helping folks out when they OCCASSIONALLY need a helping hand, but this is a way of life for way too many illegals.  And as long as we keep handing it out so freely, they will continue to rely on it and not get off their duffs and do something better with their lives.  It has to stop, people!!!  We are going broke, in case you haven't noticed!!

with respect....
I have a different view on Arizona SB1070...But while it runs contrary to your position, I think you will appreciate that my view is not categorically out of sync with your own....

First off,  I don't buy the constitutional federal supremacy argument.....Arizona has the right to enforce concurent immigration law, especially in the case of the absence of federal enforcement.  So I'm weary of the supremacy argument, and I'm warning my fellow liberal friends not to make it......so I think I've found some common ground with the rightwingers and I haven't given up hope that we can solve the problem in a bipartisan fashion, even in this awful climate.
The problem that I have with the law is that even with what HB2162 cleaned up, it still allows too much opportunity for screwing around with the civil liberties of the American people and legal immigrants by local police.   And it still criminalizes the Gospel.

Moreover, have you ever thought about, who is going to pay for the enforcement of the law and the consequences on the criminal justice system?

Now, I seek a compromise.....and I believe that Arizona should apply state immigration law violation charges,  on those who end up in custody for other criminal acts.  Not having your license and insurance while driving a vehicle is reason to be arrested, whether you are legal or not, but the state should not put itself in the position of rounding up all illegals, some of whom pose no immediate threat to society.  It's problematic, expensive, and undiginified.  Cutting them off from social services administered by the state is one thing, rounding them up like dogs is entirely different.   Lawful stops includes all police contact...including those seeking help.  So now when the police are needed, they will be afraid to call the police....the police will lose informants...and children will be the victims.

I seek understanding, and I truly want to solve problems.  I don't want to earn my keep by simply commenting on them, and inflaming one side while recieving the adoration of the other.  I would love to continue discussing this issue with courtesy and respect.   Please respond.  I know there are still conservatives out there with their heads still screwed on, and I know there is thirst out there for sensible debate on the subject.  But, if they want to squabble, I can do that, too.
