I hear a lot of people say that we should teach both evolution and creationism and just let the students decide for themselves. As if they were both valid and possible arguments. Well, aside from the fact that creationism is strictly faith based with zero evidence, in what other subject do we just let the students decide? Isn't that the point of school? To inform and educate. Thoughts?

There are some kids that would enjoy debating evolution versus creationism. In fact, I would bet that amongst their most intimate friends, these discussions occur outside of the classroom. It could be a part of a class that stresses critical thinking, something that seems absent from our society as we readily accept what we are fed by elected politicians and media as well as our religious figures, whether it be a pastor or a parent.
In my experience, many right wing conservative adults suffer from what psychologists call
cognitive dissonance
, that is the inability to hold and rationalize two conflicting views. Those kids that are growing up in a family with strict adherance to their families religious beliefs will likely become cognitive dissonant adults. However, exposing them to this critcial thinking at a younger age can make them more tolerant and open minded adults.
I would expect, however, if it was a Texas type of school board that sanctioned a class that included a debate of evolution versus creationism, the class agenda would be so scripted by the board as to make it meaningless. Ditto for my city of Colorado Springs.
