DREAM Act

The DREAM Act would open up a path to citizenship for illegal immigrant kids who are joining the military or enrolled in a university.

Eric Balderas, a Harvard student who was brought to the U.S. when he was 4 was recently arrested and will soon be in immigration court. If this act was passed, he would be on course for citizenship. He is clearly on course to be an asset to our society and maybe even the world. Why not allow those trying to better themelves through college and the military an easier path to citizenship?

According to wikipedia:

The dream act  "would provide certain illegal alien students who graduate from US high schools, who are of good moral character, arrived in the U.S. as minors, and have been in the country continuously for at least five years prior to the bill's enactment, the opportunity to earn conditional permanent residency. The alien students would obtain temporary residency for a six year period. Within the six year period, a qualified student must have "acquired a degree from an institution of higher education in the United States or [have] completed at least 2 years, in good standing, in a program for a bachelor's degree or higher degree in the United States," or have "served in the uniformed services for at least 2 years and, if discharged, [have] received an honorable discharge."[1] "Any alien whose permanent resident status is terminated [according to the terms of the Act] shall return to the immigration status the alien had immediately prior to receiving conditional permanent resident status under this Act." [2]"

I think this is a great idea. These people have already been here, albiet illegally, but are working towards bettering themselves and our country.

Check out this article; it talks about immigrants who are in school who are donating blood across the country to show that they are willing to do community service for a country that is not their own and to help show they will be good citizens.

My favorite part of the article is the quote by John Kerry "Only three in a hundred Americans will ever donate blood despite the need, but these kids are living out the real full measure of citizenship," he said. "They're living, breathing testimony of the importance of passing the DREAM Act."

We need some paths that will allow students to join our society and to increase our base of intellectials. If they are willing and able to be good citizens and are working hard in our universities, we should create that path.
