Recently, Rhode Island became another New England state to ban dog racing. Other states that have banned this gambling sport include: Massachusetts, Vermont, and Maine.
The main reason for stopping this past time is best worded by
PETA
who claim "thousands of greyhounds are killed each year as the declining dog-racing industry struggles to stay alive. Puppies are killed in the name of "selective breeding" before they ever touch a racetrack, and dogs who do qualify to become racers typically live in cages and are kept muzzled by their trainers at all times. And once the dogs who are forced to race are no longer able to run, many are abandoned, starved, shot, or sold to laboratories."

However, each state is allowed to pass regulations on how the tracks are run and the dogs are treated. In light of the fact that around 1,300 people have lost their jobs in Massachusetts since the ban, should states eliminate the past time or should they just regulate it better?

And where does it stop...should we ban horse racing as well?

To me, it seems like banning dog racing may be a bit extreme. The treatment described above seems like it would violate animal cruelty laws and thus would already be illegal. I am very skepitical about what PETA says or does. PETA has funded terrorism, has hypocritcal leaders, and if they had there way, thousands of sick people would die and owning pets would be illegal. But I digress.
I do not condone cruelty to animals which tortures them. As of right now, I do not see a reason to back a law that would ban dog racing. If evidence arises that the animals are not being treated humanely, then that particualr breeder/racer should be shut down.

I wouldn't trust PETA's word either. That organization has always been far too extreme.
