So there are many pros and cons with minimum wages. In my opinion, it has already been shown that without minimum wages the working class is quickly taken advantage of. Minimum wage seems to be the better way for the time being.

Lets start this forum up with some chat about minimum wage.

I agree completely. But my thought is minimum wage always goes up, but is there a time when it should go down? Generally, it goes up because of inflation and costs of living go up. But what would be some reasons for it to go down?

Here is an important reason. When the minimum wage goes up employers in this economy will not hire the young ones that look for part time jobs. It also impedes those looking for that second job to supplement income.

Those on the right always say that raising the minimum wage will stop hiring.

It never does. But they keep saying it.

I guess a case could be made for lowering it if we go throught a period of deflation and the cost of everything is reduced. Capping CEO compensation would be more helpful.

Lowering the minimum wage will not produce more jobs. Increasing the minimum wage will not result in the loss of jobs. I owned a mail order catalog house for 22 years. When business was good, I hired workers. When it was bad, I fired them. That is what business is all about.

I recall reading in a famous national magazine that this employer fired a worker because Congress raised the minimum wage. He told the fired worker that he would have kept him, but now he said he could not afford to pay him the new minimum wage and would have to run his business with one employee less. No name of the company, employer or employee. What do I say? I say there is no truth to this story at all. Employers are not philanthropists! We do not keep a worker on the payroll that we do not need. I do not care if the mimimum wage is ten cents an hour. You do not need an employee, you fire him! We are running a business. We are not running a church. Come to think of it, I doubt if any church would keep an employee on the payroll that they do no need. God bless.

When fascism comes to America, and I am sure it will eventually, that is when the minimum wage will go down.  When fascism comes to America, it will come with the flag and the cross. At least that is how it came to Spain 70 years ago, and to many other countries, especially countries in South America. God bless.

Thank you so much for your warm, welcoming words.  God bless you...A fascist dictattor in America? Absurd! IImpossible! Adolf Hitler started by breaking up unions. When one thinks of the newly-elected, Republican governors in Mich. Wisc. Fla. etc. who are trying o break up unions, maybe, just maybe, it is not absurd, it is not impossilbe. It is just a matter of time. I am 90. I do not have much time. God bless.

FDR created the minimum wage, I believe,in l936. It was 30 cents an hour. It is now, I read, $7.25. I  saw a Republican congressman who was recently voted into office with Tea Party support on television. He said he was seriously thinking of getting rid of the minimum wage. Great! /We will compete with one another at McDonalds, Burger King, etc. and we will end up working for 30 cents an hour. The minimum wage started at 30 cents an hour and ends up at 30 cents an hour. History, thanks to the Republicans neanderthal legislators, does repeat itself. What"s next? Stone all adulterers to death? We have, from all I have been reading, millions of adulterers in America. We willl run out of stones! Not to worry. We will import stones---From China! Humorous? I do not think so. I saw Joey Bishop, the famous comedian, in person about 65 years ago in person when he first started out. He cracked two jokes. No one in the audience laughed. He looked at them with that sad face of his and said, "Hey, this is serious! If you people don"t laugh, I don't eat!" We roared with laughter. That one line made him famous. Don"t laugh! This is serious writing. God bless.

I am sorry. I am 90. My eyesight is not too good. I am a fairly decent speller but when I read some of my posts a few days after writing them, I see many errors. Sorry. Republicans are in trouble. I watch the news every evening and I can not believe how the Republican leaders lie to their viewers over and over. Also, it is their omission of facts that, also, confound me. I saw their leader one night Boehner claim that the U. S. health system, not Obama's system, is the best in the world. The truth is, according to AP, it is the most EXPENSIVE HEALTH SYSTEM and health experts rate it anywhere from 22nd to 24th as the best health system. Republican leaders, Fox News, etc. can lie, distort etc.  all they can. The truth will eventually come out. The great writerEmile Zola said it best, "If you shut up the truth and bury it under the ground, it will but grow and gather to itself such explosive power that the day it burst through it will blow up everything in its way." I hope I live long enough to see Fox News,Republican leaders, etc. implode! God bless.

The minimum wage is absolutely essential.  Otherwise many people could not earn a decent living and would end up on Welfare.

Four things are true about the minimum wage.  First of all, the minimum wage NEVER keeps up with inflation or the cost of living.  Congress never increases the cost of the minimum wage until something politically bad threatens them and they are forced to do so.  Minimum wage increases tend to come only once every ten years.

Next, the current federal minimum wage only equals about 60% of the federal poverty line.  That means that the current $7.25 would have to increase to $12.08 just to MEET the poverty line.  The current minimum wage really is a slave wage level.

Also, minimum wage jobs are, in almost every single case, worthless "McJobs" with no possibility for advancement or hope of future prosperity.  They also have no benefits and generally are "hard labor" jobs that require (literally) backbreaking work, sometimes under dangerous or life threatening conditions.

Finally, it is impossible to live on the minimum wage unless a person works 16 hours out of a 24 hour day.  This means that such a worker barely has time to eat and sleep.  This leaves NO time for family, for vacations, or for anything else.  One would have to have their nose on the grindstone perpetually.  If a person is unable to work TWO minimum wage jobs, then they are also condemned to homelessness because according to information gathered by the US Census Bureau in 2007 the average RENT was about $700 per month.  That means that a person working one minimum wage job would have to spend over 60% of their income BEFORE TAXES on housing.  That is why there are now so many working poor people who are homeless.

Having a minimum wage is a wonderful thing, but only if that wage keeps up with inflation, prevents workers from falling into poverty and allows people the dignity of having a roof over their heads.  The current US minimum wage does none of that.  And don't believe the LIE that most minimum wage workers are youths living with their parents or older folks just adding income to their pension.  With the tidal wave of offshoring and layoffs, and the debacle of Wall Street raiding through pension plans, millions have turned to minimum wage jobs just for survival.

Here's a closing thought.  By continuing to allow US businesses to pay wages that are below the poverty level, the Goverment actually ends up providing those corporations with added profits by qualifying more people for the Earned Income Tax Credit.  Just think!  All of those minimum wage employees working for the Koch Brothers and the Walton Family, and the major goverment subsidy that goes toward supporting them and thus increasing profits for the rich.  These corporations actually educate their slave-labor wage employees on exactly how they can apply for government  benefits.  After all, every dollar that is NOT PAID in a living wage, increases the net worth of the overlords who are crushing us all.

It's hard to imagine a realistic scenario where minimum wage should be lowered. It seems to me to be the equivalent of taking away union worker's rights because they have it "good enough".
