Offshoring descripes the act of a business or company moving from one country or another, usually in order to reduce manufacturing, industrial, and/or human resource costs. The above link gives a good argument on the pros and cons of offshoring.

I was curious what others thought of offshoring. Are there pros or cons that were left out? Do the pros outweigh the cons?

In light of the ongoing disaster... I would say that the possible outcome is far worse than we ever imagined. People are calling this a spill...let's be realistic...it's a HUGE disaster. BP was not prepared for this. The US was not prepared for this. Other countries do not seem to be getting involved even though BP is a British Company. NO ONE wants to take the blame for this.

Well I was always taught to take the blame when it is my fault and then take control. I will say that I am just as much to blame for this as any other person out there. I did not pay attention to regulations being passed. I just assumed that they could handle this situation when it arose. I was wrong.

This disaster is only getting bigger, only going to be worse and I feel that unless better regulations are created, and MUCH better back up plans are put in place, we should NOT be offshore drilling. As for now...I am learning since this is in an area of law I hope to practice and paying attention so that I can help create better legislation.

It appears that the Dutch have decided to help out. See http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/2010/0601/BP-oil-spill-Will-the-sweeping-arm-system-from-the-Dutch-help. They are providing a sweeping arm system to help remove the oil off of the top of the ocean.

It's a start.

However, it seems that BP was contacted on April 23rd, three days after the disaster started. BP did not give a reply.... and it took the US Government to finally listen and get an order out on May 18th!

Apparently BP thought they had everything under control, not only before the break but after it.

Here's a new reason to not do offshoring. The pipes underneath the sea bed are likely to be dug up and crack when a hurricane goes over them. See http://www.usatoday.com/weather/storms/hurricanes/2010-06-01-oil-hurricanes_N.htm

Not only will the upcoming hurrican season possibly bring this disaster out of the Gulf, but it could cause more leaks elsewhere. I will have to say, it is nice to see this article before it has happened. But will the oil companies take the information and fix the possible issues or will they play the wait and see game?

I am in favor of offshore oil drilling. All my money is in certificates of deposits with banks. I wonder if I would be for offshore oil drilling if all my money was tied up in a hotel, motel, restaurant, etc. on a beach? I guess that is why I am a liberal Democrat. I often think what is best for all Americans and not just what is best for selfish me. We have some wonderful, very wealthy liberals such as Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Ted Turner, etc. who believe that all wealthy people SHOULD PAY A MUCH HIGHER RATE INCOME TAX, INHERITANCE TAX, ETC. They are, unfortunately, a small minority. Over 90% of the very wealthy BELIEVE THEY PAY TOO HIGH A RATE OF INCOME, INHERITANCE TAX, ETC. Andrew Carnegie said, "Any man who dies rich dies disgraced." It would appear that the vast majority of the wealthy wish to die as disgracefully as possible. God bless.

You guys realize he doesn't mean offshore drilling right? read the post.

Anyways, tariffs, taxes, and such should be placed to raise revenue and discourage it my opinion

I am definitely in favor of offshore drilling, I mean we need a full 6 months of American oil just for the benefit of a 4 cent decrease in price. Hilarious logic from idiots who think we have a magic oil genie that makes the black stuff inexhaustible. So much for any green initiative.

I believe that "offshoring" or outsourcing manufacturing to other countries is a major threat to the security of the United States. We don't make much of anything here anymore. There are two serious problems with this. Some things that are absolutely necessary to our lifestyles and security are not made here anymore--they are made "offshore". One serious example is electrical transformers that are used in substations and power plants. These are made in China. If we had a major burnout of electrical equipment (caused by a natural disaster, for instance), we would have to rely on the Chinese sending us the equipment necessary to make repairs. The Chinese could just as easily decide to base their decision to send the equipment on whether or not the dollar is devalued, some relationship or treaties with certain allies are broken, or the like. The US government could be held hostage. What a nightmare that could become. The government could easily be manipulated by any foreign power that now manufactures our necessities of life.

The other problem is that the people of the United States allowed whole factories and their equipment to be uprooted and transplanted to "offshore" locales. We allowed the "brain trust" of the manufacturing industry, the employees, to be laid off and discarded like so much rubbish, so the majority of the people who used to know how things are made are gone. We have no manufacturing infrastructure anymore. If we suddenly needed to gear up to prepare for any type of national emergency, we'd be SOL. Our national emergency might be deemed of little importance by the foreign governments who now have control over plants and equipment that were essentially funded by American taxpayers. We could be hit by outrageous prices for needed goods or outright refusals to help at all.

"Offshoring" of technology is also a threat. Identity theft, piracy and other problems are only the tip of the iceberg. I recently heard of computer chips that are manufactured offshore being deliberately tampered with so that when they are installed in equipment here they plant viruses, steal information, and cause other problems (possible interference with power grids, power plants, theft of money from banks, and other problems).

"Offshoring" is dangerous. We need strong measures to discourage it. It is not just a matter of people keeping their jobs, it is a matter of national security.
