This is an uncomfortable topic that many families delay or avoid entirely until the time comes.  And the time will come...it's as ceratin as death. It is "death", but death in a dignified way according to the wishes of the patient and not the doctors, pastors, politicians or guilt ridden family members.

Sarah Palin coined the term "death panels", and in the process squshed any further intellectual debate on end-of-life discussions. If we as a nation are to ever face one of the larger components of health care costs in America, then we have to face reality and cast aside the Sarah Palin ignorant rhetoric.

I salute 60 Minutes for addressing this sensitive topic that many Americans would rather put off.

From the 60 Minutes article: "Multiple studies have concluded that most patients and their families are not even familiar with end-of-life options and things like living wills, home hospice and pain management.

"Collectively, as a culture, we really have to acknowledge that we're mortal...Get over it. And start looking at what a healthy, morally robust way for people to die looks like."

I think EVERYONE should read the 60 Minutes article in its entirety and then have that discussion now. When the time comes, I for one want to die with dignity with no needles or tubes stuck in me, no diapers and NO DRUGS in my system keeping me snoring in bed like a zombie. I've witnessed that and find it absolutely repulsive.  It's not life...it's a long tortuous prologation of death. I want my "death panel" to honor my wishes to die with dignity...and never never like a Terri Shivo.
