Here is an initial forum post to talk about this major event. We hope to have a feature in the future to better communicate and report on world events like this. This is a very powerful earthquake and I am watching initial coverage of it early Saturday morning here on msnbc. A lot of us are still in shock from what happened Haiti. Let's all hope for the best.

One of the things that many people may not be aware of is that the Richter scale for measuring earthquakes is a logarithmic scale. Thus a magnitude 6.0 earthquake is 10 times more powerful than a magnitude 5.0 earthquake. The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 measured 8.0 on the Richer scale. The earthquake that recently struck Haiti measured 7.0 on the Richter scale. The Chile earthquake measuring 8.8 is hence 18 times more powerful than the Haiti earthquake and eight times more powerful than the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
This is common knowledge to many, but I'll throw it out here anyway in case some have forgotten.
