As one of the original authors in 2003 of a "Cap and Trade" bill, John McCain has always been acutely aware of the dire consequences of climate change. However, recently he has turned his back on science and become of the firmest opponenets of any sort of climate change reform. Once again, it's all about the politics. McCain is facing re-election against a hard-line conservative J.D. Hayworth in his state of Arizona, and he believes that if he wants to win he has to tell the people what they want to hear. This is yet another example of a Republican politician being alienated by his own party because his own conservative beliefs do not match up with how far right right the party base has veered. What do you guys think?

John McCain's flip flop on "Cap and Trade" is just one of many flip flops recorded by McCain over the years.  Think Progress has documented 44 of them in this article: John McCain's 44 Flip Flops.  The article was prepared for the Presidential campaign so the list is probably much longer than 44 right now...certainly Cap and Trade should be added.

John McCain is not an intellectual...not by a long shot.  He graduated 894 out of 899 from the Naval Academy, which places him in the bottom 1 percent of his graduating class. He has made up for his intellectual shortcomings by being a bully and an opportunist.  His temper and altercations with other members of Congress have been well documented, but he is also known to carry a grudge for a long time.

His knowledge on issues is very shallow and superficial.  That's why it's so easy for him to flip flop. He never had the depth of understanding to make him that committed to a cause.  Even his well known stand against torture went by the way side when, according to Think Progress, " in 2008, McCain voted against the Intelligence Authorization Bill, which requires the intelligence community to abide by the same standards as articulated in the Army Field Manual and bans waterboarding."

The main stream media have often touted his "maverick" behavior, but as many bloggers and reputable internet journalists have pointed out, his breaking with the party bosses was not so much being a maverick for a cause, but rather opportunism to enhance his own standing. We endured eight years of Bush, but if McCain had won, the next four years might have been even worse.

I just don't understand how Republicans can pick out people like Bush and McCain, but it is scary to think that so many Americans were duped by them.
