I am doubtful that this is where we are headed. However, if my estimates are dead wrong, and the new trump Republican party wins overwhelming in 2020, then I will agree. If that happens the democratic party will be wiped out leaving the US with a one party. If it truly is that bad, I along with millions of other people will be leaving the US and applying for citizenship in other countries... The trump Wall be used to keep people from leaving rather than keeping people out.

Right now I firmly believe trump is nothing more than a second rate pop culture con man in politics, and I remain confident that trump will disappear just as fast as he appeared (nature of pop culture). In his terms, the voters will 'cancel' The Trump Show because of bad writing, bad acting, poor production values, corruption by the producers, sex scandals, and all the other crap that causes Reality TV shows to get cancelled, never to return. I see trump as a train wretch that will happen before Feb 2019. My prediction is that we will wake up some morning to the unexpected news that trump has suddenly resigned and Mike Pence will be sworn at president before the end of that day. Maybe Putin will flip on trump, and send Mueller documents\videos\etc that explain exactly why trump never had a single bad word to say about Putin or Russia, but we'll see, or maybe never know.

J.D. I'm not doubting that. If you would have read all my threads about the "laws" here; which likely will not be amended or "new" laws introduced for elections without "money" let alone "laws" on qualifications to become a President, then this country is asking for it. Just one question: if Trump can claim the "fifth" as well "pardon" his whole family and "butt" crawlers, nothing will happen. Since he's a "con-man" he knows on how to manipulate the laws of this country. His "sweetheart son in law" just got over 3oo million in loans by "dealing" such via the White House and no one blinks. In any other country such guy would have already been in jail. Thus I still think Trump is "teflon" and because of our "antique laws" he and his cronies will continue as usual. He is chewing off piece by piece of our democracy (the latest being that the House " Intelligence commission" has been terminated. Amen.

The cited blog hardly builds a case proving that we are turning into a banana republic. It simply lists a handful of grievances the blogger has. It was also written nearly five years ago...

The definition of banana republic is a country that is dependent on a single crop or finite resource like oil or gold. Based on that definition alone, this cited blog is sheer nonsense.

While I disagree with Connie's ranting and raving about living in a fascist dictatorship, she is correct that the US more closely resembles a form of oligarchy than a banana republic.

But unlike every other oligarchy in the history of the world, we actually have the power for a course correction if people simply voted with their brains instead of their hearts. Or, more importantly, if people took the time to put "Dancing With the Stars" on pause and vote in the first place.

We get the government we vote, or don't vote, for. That's hardly a banana republic.

Jared, open your eyes please. I hate to repeat what is all going on but you will find out eventually. The destruction of this nation is in full wing. The effects of what Trump is doing will take time to show itself. The world is watching and will isolate this country.

Example: He wants to impose all kind of sanctions and tariffs on Chinese imports; I guess China will not sit idle and loves that for sure. He has created more enemy's around the world than any previous president , this will also have its effects. If he wants to undo the Iran deal; enjoy it. With N.Korea, I bet it will be a total screw up. With Europe the "tariffs" will affect relationships as well Europe may opt to get out from the agreement to help the US if attacked; like an "amendment" if such attack is "caused" by the US itself. The mess only will get bigger if Trump surrounds himself with "loyal" butt crawlers without brains who agree with everything he wants. The only thing I will agree with you is if the Dem's wake up and "vote" things may be able to change, however I fear even then the GOP will become even more fanatic to fight the Dem's the same as with "street" gangs. As long as Trump stays in power he will do everything to become the same as Putin or Kim. He will un-mantle every piece of democracy step by step. Nothing is going to stop him, as has been proven until now. He will always "play" the game as did our governor Scott who claimed the "fifth" a dozen times. Just wait and see.

As last point: yes, we don't get the government we vote for because of our "stupid antique voting laws" as well "lobbyist, "billionaires", gerrymandering and all kinds of corruption which actually determines the outcome.

Our government is "bought"; thus a "real" banana republic!! Yes the "truth" hurts.

This is a long winded post about tariffs, China, Iran, North Korea, European diplomacy, loyal butt crawlers, voting, and the unraveling of American democracy as we know it, but one thing it is not is proof that the United States is turning into a banana republic.

    O. Henry (aka William Sydney Porter) was quite clear when he coined the term "banana republic" in his book Cabbages and Kings. Some people have tried to expand that definition beyond its original meaning, but I tend to stick with the source when discussing something.

Screaming "banana republic! banana republic! banana republic!" over and over again doesn't make our country a banana republic. It simply means you enjoy screaming banana republic.

I am 100% in favor of dramatic changes that will help out the lower and middle classes to have better and less stressful lives, but let's stick with facts and not hyperbole because hyperbole and hysteria only give us people like Donald and Bernie who promise us everything in the world for free! without being honest about how stubbornly difficult it is to enact sweeping change in a country of 330 million people.

Exactly why Trump got elected. You deny the problems then blame the negative results on other people. Incrementalism created the mess. So the worst possible person elected and turns out to be the worst possible president and that is going to elect democrats . Too bad the worst healthcare , income inequality , unfair system didn't bring a Democratic tide. One person tries to right wrongs and the majority opinion shrugs him off . Trump's horrible but what is the alternative , status quo ???

Jared, sorry, please tell me why this country is going down the drain; every day it moves further down the slope, indeed in the direction of any other "banana republic" such as Venezuela. Due to our non-laws for presidents as well all possible escapes to duck other "laws" , like claiming the "fifth" and "pardoning" so he gets of the "hook", then admit for a change that the "laws" in this country are totally outdated and need drastic revisions. However it is too late, unless the Dem's can perform miracles in the next elections, which also will be full of corruption. Also admit for a change that we got a "dictator" in the making; he and his family broke all the rules and laws and no one has stopped him until now. Thus even when the Dem's take over Congress, he won't change; the damage is already done. Also please admit that there is "corruption" in everything the government does; billions for election bribery via "super Pac's and "billionaires", slush money being handed out, a 100 million plus trips for nothing by Trump and his cronies, disappearing money in the Pentagon and elsewhere, "backpocket" money, blackmail, gerrymandering, bully tactics, our self instigated wars etc.,does not make this an "banana republic"? Wow!

What is so controversial about saying we get the government we vote, or don't vote, for?

When people don't vote then the people who do get to dictate things. When Bernie or busters were so upset that their guy didn't win that they were willing to thwart the will of the people then they deserve to be blamed for the mess we are in. When people vote for a third party candidate in the "winner take all" system we have then they can't complain when a narcissistic sociopath is elected.

    How is that controversial?

I'm not denying anyone's problems. I'm calling them out for consistently voting for a party that is proven to have done absolutely nothing to better their lives as opposed to a party that is at least honest with them about how difficult it is to make peoples lives better in a stubbornly complex world going through rapid technological change.

Honesty doesn't go a long way when demagogues are promising you everything in the world for free! though.

Give me a break. Incrementalism didn't create this mess.

Here's the thing that many Americans simply refuse to admit - the world is changing. The world is not the same as it was post WWII where Europe and much of Asia was in shambles. It was really easy to give **WHITE MEN** great paying jobs even if they had minimal education and no skills when they had no competition at home or abroad.

Technological, social, cultural, and sexual revolutions upended **WHITE MEN's** stranglehold on everything. That has pissed off those **WHITE MEN** and their families who grew accustomed to being in charge of everything even if they weren't qualified.

Instead of taking it upon themselves to seek out new educational opportunities to help themselves and their families to begin adapting to this ever changing world, they threw a hissy fit and blamed immigrants, black people, and the gays for all of their problems.

Chet Ruminski Wrote: Too bad the worst healthcare , income inequality , unfair system didn't bring a Democratic tide. One person tries to right wrongs and the majority opinion shrugs him off . Trump's horrible but what is the alternative , status quo ???

Tell that to my wife who was denied health coverage due to a preexisting condition before Obamacare was passed.

The Democratics did get a "tide" in 2008, but the people who swept those Democrats into power had crazy expectations for them to reverse the near economic collapse of our country in a matter of months. So instead of staying the course they stayed home in 2010.

You know who didn't stay home in 2010? Republicans. They voted in anti-government Tea Partiers who took over our Congress and made President Obama's life a living hell for the next six years. Those same anti-government Tea Partiers also happened to get swept into power during a redistricting year, cementing their power for the next decade or more.

And instead of blaming the anti-government Tea Partiers, Republicans, or the voters who swept them into power, you blame Barack Obama, Hillary, and Bill Clinton.

Your cognitive dissonance never ceases to amaze me.

Jared, when are you going to accept that the world is flat? The facts are all there, just wake up and accept the real reality. And BTW, the moon landings were all faked. They even made a bio-pic movie about how it all happened, it is called Capricorn One.

"Your cognitive dissonance never ceases to amaze me.,"

jaredsxtn: Reality of cognitive dissonance is blaming the loss of a billion dollar campaign against the most unworthy controversial candidate to ever run on a few votes in grossly overlooked states. That is cognitive dissonance . Reverse confirmation bias is denying all the other things done wrong in the campaign and selection an exceptional circumstance and characterizing the entire campaign on that one exception.

Compared to other "civilized" countries it is. Our "bully" has now threatened "Stormy" as well those GOP members who don't agree with him with "harm"; that fits an "banana republic" very well. Jared, it is all the "little" steps you got to watch. Yes the bully would love to do the same to his enemy's as the Russians do. Thus count your "banana's" every day.
