Mitch McConnell and his caucus just put the final nail in the coffin and have successfully stolen a Supreme Court seat that should have been filled by President Obama after invoking the "nuclear option" that will allow an up or down vote on Neil Gorsuch as early as Friday.

I'm angry at Republicans, but I'm just as angry at so called Democrats who convinced themselves that 2016 was a fight between the lesser of two evils. We should not be surprised that Republicans will do whatever it takes to hijack our highest court, but I am surprised with how many Democrats continue to think that they share no blame for their protest vote for Jill Stein or just simply staying home in November.

We will now have a conservative Supreme Court for the next generation or more. I hope it was worth it for all those "Bernie or Bust" supporters out there. I hope your ideological purity continues to allow you to sleep well at night after Roe is overturned and voting rights are even further curtailed.

No, Jared, blame the system here!!! No "term limits" including the supreme court; neither for McConnell etc. Stupid 1800 voting laws, stupid "gun" laws, stupid two party system, stupid British set up of government, stupid non-vetting of an President as well the idiots he appoints, stupid rules of firing everyone in positions in the government and start all over again, stupid non-laws about having your whole family involved in governing. Having healthcare which does not work, text and drive and using your cell phone in the car; in Europe an $350 fine if using your cell phone. Etc etc. This country asked for it; it is an self inflicted wound.

Thus things don't work, if you don't just count votes and refuse to make laws for the rich ( who want to become President for instance) and only let the poor pay taxes. Sorry this country is totally screwed up; which ever way you look at it; it remains an dumb island.

It's the system we have whether we like it or not. Republicans have learned to mold it to their advantage while Democrats just continue to wait for the perfect of all perfect candidates to magically swoop down from the heavens, waive a magic wand, and implement every single progressive priority with a stroke of a magic pen.

While Democrats continue to sit and wait for that mythical savior, Republicans have stolen a Supreme Court seat and very likely will have another Supreme Court vacancy to fill in the not too distant future. And if you think Neil Gorsuch is a far right wing nut job then you will be in for a big surprise with the next person Republicans ram through now that they got rid of the filibuster. He (because lets face it, we all know it'll be a he) will make Gorsuch's views look like Ruth Bader Ginsburg's.

If Democrats weren't such a pathetic minority, maybe we could say something. Just keep repeating "Hillary got more votes"...... do you feel better yet ?

    I'm not sure I understand.

Senate Democrats are in the minority and voted unanimously against the nuclear option.

If more Democrats showed up in the swing states in 2016 then we wouldn't be having this conversation.

I share your frustration on this matter. Both sides are too blame, but people elected them will suffer the most. Let's hope Gorsuch does not turn out to a far right conservative judge.

My impression of him during the confirmation hearings is that as a person he lack normal empathy for others who are suffering, thus as a judge, it makes it easy for him to rules against people who have been wronged. He would have been a judge that upheld racist laws prior to the 1966 change constitution. He is not racist, my point is that even if there is some massive injustice, as a person, let alone a judge, he doesn't have the ability within himself to connect with the suffering of those who he rules against. IMHO, he doesn't have the ability as a human being to "feel" why sitting at the back of the bus is degrading. Legally he probably would agree racist laws were unfair laws, but the law is the law, even if the law is a bad law.

I disagree, however, that the supreme court will ever overturn Roe v Wade. The court very likely may uphold more and more anti-abortion laws that limit women's rights, such as a hypothetical state law requiring that a woman pays $2000 application fee to get an abortion, or that abortions must be approved by a judge who would decide if the woman life circumstances are justified under the law, and such decisions take over 9 months to get a ruling. Basically, state laws specifically designed to raise the bar extremely high so it limits the option to only an elite few. Much like voter suppression laws are designed to do. Gorsuch is likely to uphold such laws.

I strongly believe that if Republicans had not changed the rules of the Senate this time, they would have done it next time. In fact, I believe that if Ruth Ginsberg were to not finish her term, Trump and Republicans would ram through a Gorsuch look-a-like even with two months left in the administration. Then we would have two Trump justices...both extreme right.

Republicans are ruthless when it comes to putting their people into the courts. Throw out all the rules.

As per an earlier post by Jared, we have slight hope to pick up three Senate seats in the midterm. I think that's a long shot, but if that were to happen, then we could stop any further radical Trump picks for the court.

I remain confident that if we stay on the current track, there will be a huge democratic turnout in the midterms, which will change the dynamics of who controls washington. Or at least get the democrats to move away from being strictly obstructionist, which is their only option right now.

wwjd -- I am cautiously optimistic that we will significantly reduce the Republican majorities in both Houses in 2018. The Senate may be the tougher target because only eight of the 33 seats being contested are held by Republicans. I think we might only gain two seats in the Senate, but circumstances can change depending on how "Trumpish" every one is at the time.

As I have mentioned in other threads/posts I have had bad experiences with midterm elections. As a volunteer knocking on doors in these elections without a president on the ballot, it is hard to excite people. At many of the doors I encountered apathy staring me in the face. I think it really depends on how much emotions are charged in the month before the election.

Still we need to be working now at the precinct level to create energy around local and state candidates and issues. It's easier said than done. It is really hard to get even 40 percent voter turn-out in a midterm. In 2010 it was 36.9 percent. In 2014 even lower at 36.4 percent. And it's mostly liberals who are the least likely to vote. The Christian Crusade ensures a higher turn-out of the "Pence like" voter in midterms. They have historically cared more deeply about their issues than liberals about theirs. That's a fact.

However, maybe the Trump presidency is a wake-up call for many of them...including the Bernie or Bust voters that Jared references.

Yes, it's really the state of the union on election day. If Trump poll numbers are no better than what they are now, the republicans will take a beating.

What is sad, Trump only needs to make small changes to rise to a 6th grade maturity level, and it will be perceived Trump has come a long long way to becoming an adult. Or he could have a small change in policy and say "I won't defund planned Parenthood", and voters may feel they made a huge win by being able to keep something Trump promised to destroy.

The Supreme court has done considerable damage to our republic. The citizens united ruling sold us down the river ,literally . Our government was put up for sale , sold and sealed and delivered now the new owners are Russian oligarchs who got themselves one hell of a deal. The same court that appointed George W Bush and has become a joke themselves. One more ideologist will be all it takes to usher in the true age of fascism in America . And what happens then ? America assumes the rightfully earned tittle of evil empire aligned with the Russian bear verses the civilized world we once led ? Is that where we are going ? It appears so. Like a runnaway train , we are barreling down the tracks into a horrifying future. The Mercer's are in the control here . The billioniare evangelical crime family has purchased the white house with much assistance from the Russian intelligence agency charged with attacking the American republic. We sit by helplessly as they install a plagerizing idealogue who intends to do much damage . Another man who has no soul. No understanding of the human condition.

How long will the American people sit by and allow this ? America , where are you ?

I agree that we shouldn't get our hopes up when it comes to the Senate in 2018. The map is horrendous for us, but the only thing that gives me a sliver of hope is that the anti-Trump sentiment will be so loud by then that people will be clamoring for a change in direction.

If we do somehow gain back control then I wouldn't be surprised if the Democrats then just do what the Republicans did and refuse to move on any judges no matter their qualifications. What's really sad is that I just don't see a way out of this tit-for-tat road we're going down.

These jurists don't care if they are liked or not. They have an agenda and they are going to act on it whether we like it or not. Roberts can claim he cares about the courts standing in the public opinion all he wants, but his actions and rulings from day one as Chief Justice shows that he will do whatever it takes to force his ideology down Americans throats whether we want it or not.

They gave Clinton a popular vote majority by three million votes, but our arcane voting system allows for rural white people to overrule the will of the people.
