I watched (and was embarrassed) by the Donald Trump-Angela Merkel press conference today. But the sitdown meeting before the press conference was even more intersting.

Oh, the title of this thread is the "leader of the free world". I don't give a crap what Americans think about "American exceptionalism" and all that BS. In that meeting between the two world leaders, only one stood head and shoulders above the other as the leader of the free world...and that was Angela Merkel. Let's hope she is re-elected. The world needs her.

    Great picture comparing the two.

It likely she'll be re-elected, and that other world leaders will be looking to her for leadership. If the world turns their back on Trump, he's ego is unlikely to handle it well, and that is when he turns to tweeting insults. Trump's ego needs to always be the #1 guy in the room, and he doesn't function well in situations where there are one or more adults who have an air about them that intimidates him (people with high levels of self confidence) or people he can't manipulate so that he's has the upper hand. Deep down, Trump is a very insecure man, and he's developed several ways hide his insecurity, much of which is to attack and never back away when he's being challenged. One obvious ways he handles things is to defelect blame, its so, so, obvious he's feeling insecure when he starts finger pointing rather than accepting that the buck stops on his desk, he always passes the buck when he should accept responsibly. He is a very small man inside who is attempting to play the role of President.

wwjd -- Yes I agree with you on Trump's insecurity. In other threads we have discussed his narcissism. From the WebMD website this is how professionals describe narcissistic personality disorder:

"The word comes from a Greek myth in which a handsome young man named Narcissus sees his own reflection in a pool of water and falls in love with it.

Sound like someone you know? Are people often upset with him? Is it hard for him to keep relationships? Does he tend put himself first and think he knows the only “right” way? He might also:

    • Think about himself most of the time and talk about himself a lot
    • Crave attention and admiration
    • Exaggerate his talents and achievements
    • Believe he’s special
    • Set unrealistic goals
    • Have wide, fast mood swings
    • Have a hard time taking others’ feelings seriously
    • Strive to win, whatever it takes
    • Fantasize about unlimited success, money, and power

Someone like this may appear to have high self-esteem, but the opposite is probably true. There’s a deep sense of insecurity underneath that grand exterior. He wants others to be envious, but often he’s the jealous one. He’s competitive and threatened by others’ achievements. His relationships are often stormy and short-lived. He leaves a trail of hurt feelings in his wake.

He’s easily hurt, but either chooses to not show it or overreacts in rage. He can’t stand criticism. He makes excuses and refuses to take responsibility for his flaws and failures. He sees himself as a natural leader who can easily sway others. He doesn’t listen and often interrupts. It’s a one-way street -- all take, no give."

I have added the bolding. There are similar personality traits between narcissists as described by the WebMD website and authoritarians like Trump as described by the Psychology Today website. Trump seems to have traits of of both, but insecurity is a common thread to both.

That and his obvious trends towards many of the characteristics of fascism as we discussed in another thread are pieces to a very complex puzzle when trying to categorize the mind of Donald Trump. He is rather unique in that regard...but very dangerous. He may even be bi-polar which makes any clinical assessment of his personality even more complex.

But the leader of the free world...NO!

Yes Schmidt, absolutely right on. Just looking at the body/face language and him reading from an"prepared" piece of paper, while Merkel (as well as Obama did) does everything relaxed while looking at the crowd or your "guest" without an piece of prepared paper. He has no clue what Germany is all about; neither understands Merkel's background and hard life while in East Germany. She had to fight to get where she is now; Trump got it via "bullying" and an "golden spoon". Neither he has learned any manners at all. Looking at him with his hands flat together between his knees, that is the same stance as he had while he sat together with Obama. The body language says: I don't feel comfortable as well showing an defensive mode.

I place this under this subject, but since no one started an subject about the "wire tapping" issue, but was mentioned during Merkel's visit. Trump sticks to his conviction, but defends it such way that he only makes it worse for himself. He now claims that it was Fox News fault. Fox immediately replied that they did not support that claim.

Now my question is : What next? I wonder if anyone has the "backbone" to really "nail " Trump and does something like solid apologies towards Obama as well take other actions like impeachment procedures. Enough is enough! You can't run an country this way, because he'll never will become "presidential"

Yes, it is a frustration with all of us. Hardly a day goes by without some new controversy...another outright bold lie or conflict of interest with his real estate dealings and shady Russian oligarchs. Rachel Maddow covers it and then we file it away.

Monday is supposed to be a big day with James Comey testifying but will we the public be any smarter...No. My only hope is that Comey and the FBI do have an in-depth investigation on-going that they don't want to compromise before they have all their ducks in a row. Or maybe that's wishful thinking on my part. Will everything just eventually fade from memories?

With Jeff Sessions in charge of the Justice Department, it is hard to see any investigations amounting to anything, even though he has recused himself.

Trump is not insecure. There is no insecurity in espousing bold face lies just as casually as saying hello. He feels empowered and chosen. A divine oracle. Given a Presidency through a joke of a campaign. Backtracked on every progressive program but forging ahead on his personal choices. The wire tapping issue is going nowhere while his company, brand and stock apparently soaring.

Trump is an FBI CIA type. Comedy might even apologize for Trump saying surveillance may have been confused with wire tapping.

The Atlantic, March 22, 2016: The Unnerving Insecurities of Donald Trump

The Week, December 11, 2015: The profound insecurity of Donald Trump

Vanity Fair, January 22, 2017: Is Donald Trump’s Insecurity a National Security Threat?

I have cherry picked a few articles above that provide "confirmation bias" for my thinking that Trump is really insecure. People who are incompetent often make up for the deficiency by being an aggressive bully. The biggest fear that Trump has is that he might fail and that the public will see him as a failure...a loser.

Of course you can also find right wing websites who love the way Trump bullies liberals and Republicans who might cross him. They cannot recognize that he is a phony...a con artist. The confidence that he portrays is a façade.

The 40 to 45 percent of people who have been conned into voting for him or otherwise supporting him, of course, will not recognize his insecurity.

Yeah, money and power do not make any person truly secure, its who they are deep down that give them nerves of steel or the lack of it. Take away all Trump's money and the power he has a president, he's very scared little man. Whatever bravado he presents to public and others has no foundation underneath.

IMHO, Trump became wealthy because he cheated and took advantage of others, and he is very very good at doing that, probably one the very best. Those methods will not work as President, thus he will fail, or he will get caught issuing shady orders that are illegal. We all know he'd love to by-pass the legal process and do things his way, using methods that are not only illegal but go against our moral sense of justice. For men like Trump, laws interfere with business, and the ideal market place is to let business men fight it out using whatever methods it takes to win, nothing is off the table in their ideal world of competition. The thing is, Trump is a second rate hack, and if he were to compete with men who are completely ruthless, he would be long gone if not for laws keeping him alive and in business.

Trump spent Friday night in Mar Largo probably seething about his inability to make Angela Merkel see things his way and show him gratitude for "keeping Germany safe". So what does he do on Saturday morning? Tweet his frustration:

"Despite what you have heard from the FAKE NEWS, I had a GREAT meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel," the president wrote. "Nevertheless, Germany owes ... vast sums of money to NATO & the United States must be paid more for the powerful, and very expensive, defense it provides to Germany!"

He just can't let it go. Now he's trying to bully the leader of the free world into spending more on the military...or in other words, buy more weapons made in America. She must be shaking in her boots.

    Schmuck!

He is looking tinier every day.
